Amazon has recently launched a significant software update for its current-generation Colorsoft and Paperwhite Kindle devices, introducing a highly anticipated feature that enhances user experience. This update allows users to double-tap on the sides or back of their Kindle to turn the page, making reading more intuitive and seamless.
The new functionality was highlighted in the release notes for the 5.18.1 update, as reported by The eBook Reader. To access this feature, users can navigate to Settings > Device Options on their Kindle. While the update was not immediately available as an over-the-air update for all devices, tech-savvy users could manually download and install it following Amazon’s provided instructions.
The double-tap feature works effectively with relatively light taps anywhere on the Colorsoft. It requires two quick taps to register, which minimizes the chances of accidental activation. However, it’s important to note that this feature is currently limited to one direction only; users can either jump to the next page or scroll down a lengthy list of books. There is hope that future updates may introduce additional tapping options, such as triple-taps, to enable scrolling up or returning to the previous page.
The 5.18.1 software update is also accessible for older versions of the entry-level Kindle, as well as the Paperwhite, Scribe, and Oasis models. However, the new double-tap page-turning feature is exclusive to the Colorsoft and the 12th-generation Paperwhite. This exclusivity was confirmed by Amazon spokesperson Connor Rice in a statement to The Verge.
With this latest software update, Amazon continues to enhance the functionality of its Kindle devices, providing users with innovative features that improve the reading experience. The introduction of the double-tap feature is just one of the ways Amazon is focused on making digital reading more accessible and enjoyable for its users.
