Revolutionary Repairability: Google Unveils Pixel Watch 4's Game-Changing Features
The Pixel Watch 4 introduces a revolutionary repairable design, making it easy to replace batteries and displays. Plus, more charging options are on the way!

Introducing the Pixel Watch 4: A Major Leap in Repairability

One of the most anticipated features of the Pixel Watch 4 is its newfound ability to be repaired. This significant upgrade addresses a long-standing issue faced by users of previous generations. In an insightful interview, Google elaborated on how this transformation was achieved, while also hinting at the introduction of more third-party chargers in the near future.

Repairability: A Game-Changer for Sustainability

For the first three generations of the Pixel Watch, a malfunctioning smartwatch left users with few options. If your device broke, unless you had an extended warranty, your only recourse was to purchase a new watch. Even when Google replaced units, it was often a full replacement rather than a repaired device, creating a significant gap in the company's sustainability efforts. Fortunately, with the launch of the Pixel Watch 4, this issue has been resolved.

Thanks to a "tremendous collaboration" between Google's design and engineering teams, the Pixel Watch 4 is now designed for easy repairs. As reported by Wired, the watch can be disassembled using a simple T2 screwdriver, which is located inside the mounting area for the bands. Notably, the absence of adhesive in the design is a remarkable achievement, especially since the watch maintains its impressive 5ATM / IP68 water resistance.

Easy Access to Internal Components

The new design allows for straightforward battery and display replacements—a feature that was not possible in earlier models. During the Made by Google event, representatives from 9to5Google had the opportunity to see a disassembled Pixel Watch 4, with the easily accessible screws clearly visible.

The teardown process for the Pixel Watch 4 is refreshingly simple. There are two T2 screws located beneath the watch band pocket. Unscrewing these grants access to the internals without the need to deal with any adhesives. Interestingly, the Biosensor Hub, which contains the heart rate monitor and other essential sensors, remains connected during battery replacements. To remove the battery, simply detach the haptic motor using the T2 screwdriver. After removing two additional screws, the battery can be disconnected from the main board.

Streamlined Repair Process

Throughout this repair process, Google has intentionally utilized T2 screws, allowing users to rely on the same Torx screwdriver for battery replacements. This design choice significantly reduces the number of tools required for repairs. If users need to replace the display, they will need to unplug the Biosensor Hub, disconnect the battery brackets, unplug the display connector, and remove four screws securing the glass to the housing.

For those interested in DIY repairs, spare parts for the Pixel Watch 4 will be available through iFixit. A demonstration of the entire repair process took just 13 minutes, highlighting the watch's user-friendly design.

Future Charging Options for Pixel Watch 4

In the same interview, Google confirmed that users can expect “more options” regarding third-party charging solutions for the Pixel Watch 4. Historically, charging accessories for previous Pixel Watch generations have been sparse and often of subpar quality. While specific options have not yet been released, it appears that Google is collaborating with partners to expand the range of charging accessories available for the smartwatch. This could include versatile 2-in-1 or 3-in-1 docks, similar to those popular among Apple Watch users.

Availability of Pixel Watch 4

The Pixel Watch 4 is set to begin shipping in October, making it an exciting new option for smartwatch enthusiasts. With enhanced repairability and the promise of improved charging options, the Pixel Watch 4 is poised to be a game-changer in the wearable tech market.

More on the Pixel Watch

In addition to its repairable design, the Pixel Watch is also receiving stylish new leather bands from Nomad, offering users even more customization options. Stay tuned for more updates, including a closer look at how the Pixel Watch 4’s charging contacts perform across different color variants and the functionality of its new charger, which will alert users when it’s not charging properly.
