reMarkable is well aware that its e-paper tablets are designed for productivity, but the size of their current lineup can make portability a challenge. To meet the needs of users who are constantly on the go, the company has unveiled a new, pocket-sized version of its flagship device: the reMarkable Paper Pro Move. This innovative tablet features a compact 7.3-inch display, reminiscent of a traditional reporter’s notepad, making it an ideal choice for those who need to work while standing or moving.
According to Chief Product Officer Mats Herding Solberg, the reMarkable Paper Pro Move is specially crafted for individuals who want to accomplish “real work done while standing up and holding it in one hand.” While reMarkable has established itself as a brand synonymous with serious, distraction-free work, the practicality of using the device while on the move presents unique challenges.
The reMarkable Paper Pro Move draws on the successful design elements of its predecessors while introducing new features tailored for mobility. Launched in 2016, the company has evolved its offerings significantly, with the Paper Pro marking a leap in technology that included a larger display, improved internals, and the capability to reproduce color. The new Paper Pro Move measures 7.6 inches in height and 4.3 inches in width, housing the same advanced Canvas Color display found in the larger model.
Under the hood, the Paper Pro Move is powered by a 1.7GHz dual-core Cortex A55 processor, slightly less powerful than the quad-core processor used in the Paper Pro. Despite having the same 2GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, the battery has been reduced from 5,030mAh to 2,344mAh. Yet, the device still promises an impressive two weeks of battery life, ensuring users can rely on it throughout their busy schedules.
To enhance usability, the reMarkable Paper Pro Move features a back cover designed with a high-friction surface, similar to that of the company’s styluses, allowing for a secure grip. Users are encouraged to pair the tablet with a folio for added protection, as the risks associated with dropping a device while commuting are ever-present.
With the transition to a smaller device, significant adjustments were made to the software to improve functionality. The new drag-and-drop toolbar feature allows users to customize their workspace in both portrait and landscape orientations, enhancing efficiency and comfort while navigating the device. However, the lack of support for Bluetooth keyboards on the Move may deter some users, as the only text input option is through the on-screen keyboard.
While the reMarkable Paper Pro Move is designed for portability, the smaller writing area—3.6 by 6.4 inches—can present challenges for users accustomed to larger writing spaces. The tablet's landscape orientation may provide a longer writing line, yet it can also require more frequent scrolling, which may disrupt the writing flow.
Developing an effective handwriting recognition system remains a priority for reMarkable. With the introduction of the search feature, users can now find handwritten notes more efficiently, provided their handwriting is legible enough for indexing. Nonetheless, the potential for misinterpretations in OCR technology is a known drawback, and users with less clear handwriting may experience more frequent errors.
The reMarkable Paper Pro Move is also set to improve collaboration with features like Quick Share, which allows users to share files easily via a generated QR code. This addresses the previously cumbersome process of transferring documents to and from the device, making it more user-friendly for those who frequently collaborate with others.
The reMarkable Paper Pro Move is now available for order at a price of $449, which includes the standard Marker. Customers can also opt for the upgraded Marker Plus, featuring an eraser tip, for an additional cost. To ensure the device is well-protected during transport, reMarkable offers a range of folio options, priced between $69 and $139, with discounts available for bundled purchases.
For those who find value in a portable e-paper tablet, the reMarkable Paper Pro Move presents a compelling choice, albeit with some limitations that potential users should consider. The blend of advanced technology with a focus on mobile productivity makes it a noteworthy addition to reMarkable’s product lineup.
