Microsoft is officially rolling out its annual Windows 11 update, known as version 25H2, starting today. After a month of testing the update in the Windows Insider Release Preview ring, this new version is now available to all Windows 11 users via Windows Update.
The 25H2 update is relatively modest in size, designed for quick installation. Microsoft is delivering it as a small “enablement package,” which means that it will not take much time to complete the update process. According to John Cable, the vice president of program management for Windows servicing and delivery, “This means that it contains all the recently announced features in Windows 11, version 24H2.” Both versions share a common code base and servicing branch, simplifying the update experience for users.
This shared code base between versions 24H2 and 25H2 allows Microsoft to continue releasing new Windows features monthly for both versions. Users can expect regular enhancements and updates that improve their overall experience with Windows 11.
While the update may not be extensive, it does include vital improvements under the hood. “Version 25H2 includes significant advancements in build and runtime vulnerability detection, coupled with AI-assisted secure coding,” Cable states. This update aims to mitigate security threats, adhering to a comprehensive security development lifecycle (SDL) policy and requirements.
In addition to security enhancements, the 25H2 update is also a bit leaner. Microsoft has removed PowerShell 2.0 and the Windows Management Instrumentation Command-line (WMIC) to streamline the operating system further. These changes are part of Microsoft's ongoing efforts to optimize Windows 11.
If you want to install the 25H2 update today, ensure the “get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” option is enabled in your Windows Update settings. However, it is crucial to note that Microsoft may impose a safeguard hold if it detects any potential issues, such as application or driver incompatibilities, before offering the update.
Microsoft plans to expand the rollout of the Windows 11 version 25H2 update over the next few months. Users can stay informed about known issues and device incompatibilities by visiting the Windows release health hub. This resource will provide timely updates and support for a seamless transition to the new version.
