Recent reports suggesting that Microsoft has secretly raised prices on its Surface devices have been proven inaccurate. According to a statement from Nancie Gaskill, the General Manager of the Surface group, the company has not increased prices but has instead removed the base models of the Surface Pro 13-inch and Surface Laptop 13.8-inch from its official website, Microsoft.com.
Gaskill clarified that customers can still purchase the base models of the Surface Pro and Surface Laptop at a starting price of $999 from other major retailers. Currently, both models are available at discounted prices, with listings at Amazon and Best Buy showing them for just $800. This pricing is particularly notable as it's the same as the smaller and less powerful Surface Pro 12-inch, prompting buyers to carefully consider their choices between portability and performance.
There remains some uncertainty regarding the production status of these base models. It is possible that Microsoft is working to deplete its existing inventory, meaning future customers may find themselves limited to purchasing only the more expensive variants of the Surface devices.
Earlier this week, tech site XDA first reported on a potential price change for Surface devices, noting that the starting prices for the 13.8-inch Surface Laptop and 13-inch Surface Pro appeared to rise from $1,000 to $1,200. However, this increase was attributed to the availability of higher-spec models rather than a general price hike across the board.
In addition to the pricing news about Surface devices, Microsoft has recently increased the prices of its accessories as well. The cost of the 65W Surface power supply has risen from $90 to $120, while the 127W variant has jumped from $125 to $175. This trend of rising costs has extended to Xbox products too, with the Xbox Series X now priced $80 higher, and the Xbox Series S increasing by $100.
For those considering a purchase, it may be wise to explore alternative options for accessories, such as the many more affordable products available from brands like Anker, as highlighted in our fast charging guide. As of May 8, 2025, Microsoft has confirmed that there has been no increase in the pricing of its Surface devices, alleviating concerns among potential buyers.
