Meta has recently announced exciting updates for its Ray-Ban smart glasses. These updates include new color lens combinations and the wider availability of features that were previously limited to the Meta Early Access Program. Among these features are live translation, the ability to send messages and make calls through Instagram, and interactive conversations with Meta AI based on visual context.
The much-anticipated live translation feature was first introduced at Meta Connect 2024 last October and saw a limited rollout through the Early Access Program in select countries last December. Starting today, this feature is available in all markets where the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses are sold. Users can now engage in conversations with individuals who speak English, French, Italian, or Spanish, with real-time translations delivered through the smart glasses in the user's preferred language.
For travelers, an added convenience is the ability to download a language pack in advance, allowing the live translation feature to function without requiring Wi-Fi or a cellular network. This makes it an ideal companion for those exploring foreign countries.
In addition to the new features, Meta has unveiled new color lens combinations for the popular Ray-Ban Meta Skyler frame style. Customers can now purchase frames in shiny chalky gray with sapphire Transitions lenses. Furthermore, the shiny black frames can be paired with either clear or green-tinted lenses, providing more options for personalization.
Meta also shared updates on additional features that are on the horizon. The Live AI feature, which allows the Meta AI smart assistant to continuously observe user interactions for more natural conversations, is expected to be available soon in the US and Canada. Furthermore, users will soon be able to send and receive direct messages, photos, audio calls, and video calls via Instagram on their smart glasses, similar to the functionalities already available on WhatsApp, Messenger, and native messaging apps on iOS and Android.
Access to music apps such as Spotify, Amazon Music, Shazam, and Apple Music is also expanding beyond the US and Canada. However, it is worth noting that requesting music playback or information from Meta AI will still require the user's default language to be set to English.
Recently, Meta has made Meta AI available in the UK and plans to extend access to all supported countries in the EU starting next week. Additionally, the company is preparing to launch its Ray-Ban smart glasses in Mexico, India, and the United Arab Emirates, although specific timelines for these launches have yet to be announced.
With these updates, Meta is enhancing the functionality and appeal of its Ray-Ban smart glasses, making them an increasingly attractive option for consumers looking for smart eyewear that seamlessly integrates technology into their daily lives.
