Apple's latest iOS update, version 26.1, is now available for eligible devices starting Monday. While this update does not introduce any groundbreaking features, it does include one highly-requested enhancement: the ability to adjust the transparency of the translucent liquid glass design. This update addresses user feedback, allowing those who were not fond of the iOS 26 aesthetics to customize their experience more effectively.
Previously, users who disliked the look of iOS 26 could only reduce transparency by accessing the accessibility settings, which effectively disabled the liquid glass overlay. With the release of iOS 26.1, Apple introduces a new menu that enables users to maintain the liquid glass look while increasing opacity. To access this feature, navigate to Settings > Display & Brightness > Liquid Glass. Here, you can choose between the original “Clear” option or a more opaque “Tinted” choice. Moreover, a preview of each option is available during selection, enhancing user experience.
The liquid glass design represented Apple's most significant overhaul since transitioning to a flat design in 2013. However, as with most substantial changes, user feedback has been mixed. Some users have reported that the translucent design made certain interface elements, such as notifications and navigation controls, more challenging to read. On the other hand, many have praised the attention to detail and the refreshed look, viewing it as a much-needed update to an interface that had become somewhat stale over the years.
In addition to the transparency settings, iOS 26.1 offers several other enhancements. Users can now customize gestures on the home screen, including the option to open the camera app by swiping left on the lock screen. To activate this feature, go to Settings > Camera > Lock Screen Swipe to Open Camera.
Another significant addition in this update is the ability to locally capture audio and video while recording a video call. This feature is particularly useful for those recording podcasts or calls on the go. Apple originally announced this capability for iPadOS during the Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) held in June.
iOS 26.1 also expands language support for Apple Intelligence, adding eight new languages: Chinese (Traditional), Danish, Dutch, Norwegian, Swedish, Portuguese (Portugal), Vietnamese, and Turkish. Furthermore, live translation support has been introduced for five additional languages: Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), Italian, Japanese, and Korean, making the device more accessible to a broader audience.
Alongside these new features, iOS 26.1 brings several quality of life improvements. Users can now utilize gestures to change songs in Apple Music, and there is a new slider feature to stop alarms, preventing accidental shutdowns. Additionally, users now have the option to automatically install security improvements, ensuring their devices remain protected.
