Earlier this week, Instagram Threads unveiled what the company claims is its most-requested feature to date: direct messages (DMs). While this addition has been celebrated by some, it has also sparked significant backlash from a segment of the user base, particularly among women who are expressing the need for an option to completely opt out of DMs. These users cite concerns over potential harassment that could arise from this new functionality.
Although direct messages are a common feature across various social networks similar to Threads, such as X, Bluesky, and Mastodon, many users appreciated the absence of this option in Threads until now. One user poignantly questioned, “I don’t want to receive DM’s. How do I shut this thing off? I ask on behalf of all women.” Another user lamented, “Great. More ways for women to get harassed online,” while a third sarcastically remarked, “Congrats on adding a feature only stalkers were interested in.”
The announcement of DMs, shared by Instagram head Adam Mosseri on Threads, received a flood of responses. Many users expressed their discontent, stating they did not want DMs and that “nobody asked for this.” One user highlighted a poll that garnered thousands of votes, indicating a strong preference among Threads users for the absence of a DM feature. Numerous users inquired about the possibility of disabling DMs, but unfortunately, such an option does not currently exist.
In addition to harassment fears, users are also worried about their inboxes becoming inundated with bots, spam, and other unwelcome messages. Currently, the system requires users to follow someone before they can DM them. If someone becomes bothersome, unfollowing that user will revoke their access to your inbox. For those seeking a more definitive solution, blocking a user not only restricts their ability to send DMs but also blocks them on Instagram as well.
It’s important to recognize that those voicing complaints about this new feature may be more inclined to share their dissatisfaction online, similar to how consumers often leave negative reviews on platforms like Google Maps and Yelp while remaining silent about positive experiences. Nevertheless, these concerns hold merit. As a social media platform evolves, introducing new features after the initial culture has been established can lead to disruption among users. This new method of interaction alters the way some users wish to engage with Threads.
Furthermore, the lack of control over the user experience—such as the absence of an opt-out option—can leave individuals feeling powerless. Meta may have believed that linking DMs to follower status would provide users with a semblance of control over who could contact them privately. However, what the company may have overlooked is that on a public platform like Threads, users often follow individuals to engage with their content but prefer to maintain a safe distance from them as strangers.
As Instagram Threads continues to evolve, it remains crucial for the platform to listen to user feedback and consider implementing features that prioritize user safety and comfort. The introduction of direct messages may have been well-intentioned, but addressing user concerns about harassment and control will be essential for the platform's future success.
