In a swift response to Apple's recent announcements at WWDC 2025, Google has rolled out a significant update to its mobile operating system. Starting Tuesday, Android 16 is officially available for Google’s Pixel smartphone lineup, introducing a host of exciting features designed to enhance user experience. Key improvements include the addition of group chat functionality to RCS, AI-powered editing suggestions in Google Photos, and support for corporate badges within Google Wallet.
Android 16 boasts a range of new features aimed at improving usability and accessibility. One of the standout additions is the iOS-style live notifications on the lock screen, enabling users to receive real-time updates without unlocking their devices. Additionally, the update incorporates Google’s new Material 3 Expressive design language, which provides a fresh and modern aesthetic to the user interface.
To bolster security, Android 16 introduces advanced capabilities to protect against theft and scams. Public figures will benefit from an updated advanced protection mode, ensuring their privacy remains intact. Another notable feature is the support for Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) audio devices, allowing users to utilize external microphones for improved call quality while also providing new native volume control options directly from the device.

For those with the Pixel 8a and newer devices, a new battery health indicator will be introduced, while Pixel 5 and later models will receive an accessibility feature through the Magnifier app. This app can describe items in the user’s view, providing haptic feedback when a match is found.
Enterprise users of Android will benefit from updates that allow the storage of corporate badges in Google Wallet and the ability to use Google’s Gemini chatbot within Google Docs for summarizing content and translating text. Additionally, enhancements to the Chrome browser on Android will improve the handling of PDFs, including linked document viewing capabilities.
