Google has officially begun rolling out an enhanced version of its Translate app, which now includes a groundbreaking feature that enables users to generate more precise translations with the help of Gemini AI. This new functionality was first reported by 9to5Google and is designed to improve the overall translation experience for users.
The standout feature of this update is the introduction of an AI model picker located at the top of the app interface. This allows users to choose between two distinct translation modes: Fast and Advanced. Currently, this feature has been made available to select users on iOS devices, while Android users have yet to receive access.
At this moment, the Advanced mode supports translations specifically between English and French, as well as English and Spanish. To utilize this new model, users simply need to click on the picker at the top of the app, enabling them to choose the mode that best suits their needs.
The Fast mode is optimized for speed and efficiency, providing quick translations that may not always capture the nuances of the original text. In contrast, the Advanced mode prioritizes accuracy and context, leveraging the capabilities of Gemini AI to deliver refined translations.
To illustrate the performance of these two modes, I tested a passage from Molière's renowned play, Le Misanthrope. The translation using Fast mode yielded a nearly literal interpretation: “Frankly, he's fit for the closet; you've based yourself on bad models, and your expressions are not natural.” While this translation captured the basic meaning, it was ultimately inaccurate and somewhat unclear.
On the other hand, the Advanced mode provided a more nuanced and stylistically appropriate translation: “Frankly, it's fit to be thrown in the toilet; you have based yourself on wretched models, and your expressions are not at all natural.” This version not only conveyed the meaning more accurately but also preserved the tone of the original text.
When comparing translations, the standalone Gemini app in Pro mode offered a similar result to the Advanced mode, while also providing additional context about the passage and its relevance within the broader narrative of the play. Although the Advanced mode sacrifices some speed for greater accuracy, it appears to be a highly beneficial tool for those seeking reliable translations.
For users who require precise translations, it may be advisable to consult the Gemini app directly, as it can provide extra context that enhances understanding. However, it is essential to keep in mind that all AI systems, including Google Translate and Gemini, can occasionally produce errors or "hallucinate" results. Therefore, users should remain vigilant and verify translations when accuracy is critical.
