Earlier this year, Google Photos streamlined its user interface by simplifying the bottom bar to just three items. Now, the platform is taking another significant step forward by rolling out a new “Create” tab. Announced last month, this feature aims to provide users with a centralized location to access various creation tools for their photos and videos.
The new Create tab, which is represented by a paintbrush icon, is strategically placed between the Collections and Ask/Search sections of the app. Currently, Google highlights the Photo to Video feature at the top of this tab, allowing users to seamlessly transform their photos into dynamic video clips.
Within the Create tab, users will find a grid of tools designed to enhance their multimedia experience. The following features are available:
Animations: Create quick-moving GIFs from selected photos and videos. Cinematic Photos: Add a captivating 3D effect to your images. Collage: Combine multiple photos into a single, stylish layout. Highlight Videos: Produce a video set to music using your selected photos and videos. Photo to Video: Animate static photos into engaging six-second videos. Remix: Transform your images into various artistic styles, including Anime. As users explore these features, they will notice that all the square cards in the Create tab showcase examples and play simultaneously. While this approach effectively conveys the available options, it can also feel overwhelming due to the busy layout, particularly with the top animation.
In addition to the tools mentioned, users can scroll through a carousel featuring 16 different Collage templates. The final section of the Create tab allows users to initiate a Highlight video, with Google providing suggestions for people, locations, and activities to help jumpstart the creative process.
Despite the introduction of the Create tab, the plus menu in the top-right corner of the app remains available. This menu primarily focuses on creating new albums and accessing the print store. Additionally, it includes shortcuts for partner sharing and importing content from other sources. However, it does feature some duplication with the tools already listed in the Create tab, such as Collage and Highlight video.
Currently, the Google Photos Create tab is rolling out with version 7.40 on Android devices. However, it is important to note that this feature is not yet widely available to all users. Stay tuned for further updates as Google continues to enhance the Google Photos app.
