In August 2024, Google made headlines when it abruptly removed the YouTube Picture-in-Picture (PiP) functionality from its popular messaging app, Google Messages. This decision left many users disappointed as they lost the ability to watch videos while texting. However, recent developments indicate that Google is working on reinstating this feature, much to the delight of users who enjoyed multitasking while using the app.
The latest beta version of Google Messages, identified as v20250319, has unveiled promising signs of a comeback for the YouTube PiP support. New text strings and code related to the YouTube player have been integrated into the Messages app, suggesting that Google is actively developing this feature once again. Among the newly added strings are commands for Pause and Play, which indicate that users may soon have the ability to control video playback directly within their messages.
Additionally, a new activity related to YouTube player support has been identified, allowing users to launch the PiP window in chats. This represents a significant step forward, as previous versions did not support this capability. Despite successfully launching the PiP window, it is currently non-functional as Google has yet to fully enable the feature.
The removal of the YouTube PiP functionality from Google Messages initially raised questions among users. The decision appeared to stem from several factors, including low usage rates and a strategic push towards encouraging subscriptions to YouTube Premium. This premium service offers users enhanced features, including a fully operational PiP window that can be repositioned anywhere on the screen. While the feature's absence was felt by many, it seemed to represent a shift in Google's approach to monetizing its video services.
With the reintroduction of the YouTube PiP feature currently in the works, users are hopeful for a stable release that will restore their ability to enjoy video content seamlessly within their messaging experience. Although the functionality remains dormant for now, the groundwork laid in this beta version suggests that Google is committed to enhancing the Google Messages app.
