Introducing the Logitech MX Master 4 Wireless Mouse: A Leap into Haptic Technology

If you’ve seen the recent leaks, you’re likely aware that haptic feedback is the standout feature in Logitech’s new MX Master 4 wireless mouse, priced at $119.99 and set to launch in October. However, don’t expect this to bring rumble effects to your YouTube videos or favorite websites—though that would be an interesting experiment! The haptic technology in the MX Master 4 differs significantly from the haptics-based click system found in Logitech’s upcoming Pro X2 Superstrike gaming mouse, which is expected in 2026.

What Sets the Haptic Sense Panel Apart?

The innovative Haptic Sense Panel, located in the mouse’s grippy thumb rest, vibrates when pressed. This action unlocks Logitech’s Action Ring overlay, a customizable interface where you can fill it with various app and system-level shortcuts. The flexibility of the Action Ring is remarkable; you can even nest multiple Action Rings, allowing you to drill down to highly specific commands that cater to your workflow.

To fully utilize these haptic features, you will need to engage significantly with Logitech’s software, Logi Options Plus. The haptics enhance every interaction you have with Logitech’s functionalities, including gestures, Action Rings, and Smart Actions—these are pre-made or custom macros designed to automate specific tasks. One of my favorite features, which is disabled by default, is the option to enable haptic feedback when moving between screens. This small jolt of feedback helps alleviate the frustration of losing track of your cursor throughout the day.

New Features of the MX Master 4

Before diving deeper into the app integration, let's discuss the enhancements of the MX Master 4 itself. The mouse features frosted, semi-transparent main buttons that lend a touch of elegance to its design. A notable upgrade is the inclusion of a USB-C Bolt transmitter, allowing compatibility with other Logitech products, including the newly released Signature Slim Solar Plus keyboard.

In terms of battery life, Logitech claims that the MX Master 4 can last up to 70 days on a full charge. However, keep in mind that setting the haptic feedback to “high” intensity will reduce the lifespan per charge. Additionally, the gesture button has been relocated from the thumb grip—where it was on the MX Master 3S—to a dedicated button situated next to the other two thumb buttons, just below the horizontal scroll wheel. To execute a desired action, simply hold the button and move the mouse in a cardinal direction.

Maximizing Productivity with Action Rings

Logitech promotes the Action Ring as a feature that can save time, serving as a practical alternative to traditional keyboard shortcuts or moving your cursor across the screen. You don’t need to be a power user to benefit from this functionality. For example, I programmed an Action Ring to quickly launch The Verge and another to open WordPress, where I create articles.

Moreover, Logitech’s app includes plugins for many third-party applications. For instance, when using Affinity Photo, pressing the Haptic Sense Panel reveals an Action Ring with commands that are likely to be useful, such as displaying line guides for proper object alignment or executing simple copy and paste functions. It’s important to note that while Action Rings aren’t a new concept, the haptic sensations derived from navigating them are a fresh and exciting addition.

Engaging with the haptic feedback enhances the experience, providing a satisfying jolt when clicking the haptics button or moving the cursor between Action Ring bubbles. While it’s a delightful feature, I must admit that I haven’t fully integrated Action Rings into my workflow yet. I apologize to my employer, Vox Media, for the time I could have saved by leveraging this productivity-enhancing tool!

Is It Worth Upgrading to the MX Master 4?

With haptics being the primary new hardware feature in the MX Master 4, I don’t believe it’s essential to upgrade if you already own the MX Master 3S, as the two models share many similarities. However, if you’re in the market for a new mouse, the MX Master 4 stands out as a worthy option, especially since it launches at the same price of $119.99 as its predecessor.

For those who haven’t experienced an MX Master-series mouse before, the value of an ergonomically designed mouse cannot be overstated. With its exceptional scroll wheel, quiet clicks, and impressive battery life, the MX Master 4 offers significant advantages over standard mice. The haptic feedback is simply a delightful bonus that enhances the overall user experience.
