Apple is preparing for a major series of announcements at the highly anticipated WWDC, which is set to begin on June 9. According to Bloomberg’s renowned tech journalist, Mark Gurman, this year’s event promises to introduce a range of exciting updates across various platforms. Among the highlights, we can expect a substantial redesign of iOS 19 for both iPhone and iPad, along with significant visual enhancements for macOS 16.
However, Apple’s ambitions extend far beyond just these two operating systems. In the latest edition of his Power On newsletter, Gurman revealed that both watchOS and tvOS will also undergo considerable redesigns. Additionally, visionOS is slated for some updates, indicating that Apple is set to unify its modern design language across all software platforms. This move aims to create a more cohesive experience for users across all their Apple devices.
Users can anticipate a more liberal application of transparency, alongside glass-like materials in the new designs. There will also be changes to navigation hierarchies within apps, revamped icons, and much more. These elements are already hinted at in the promotional artwork for WWDC, which features a glassy, reflective 3D icon representing the Apple Park rainbow stage. The theme of translucency and glassy textures suggests a fresh aesthetic that will permeate the upcoming operating systems.
While the software for the Apple Watch has been updated multiple times, the tvOS interface has remained relatively unchanged since its launch in 2015. Currently, tvOS presents a visual style that feels distinct from the design language used in iOS. However, this disparity is likely to be addressed as Apple strives to harmonize the appearance of all its platforms. This redesign is anticipated to be the most significant visual overhaul since the introduction of iOS 7.
Much of the inspiration for these redesigns is expected to come from the visual style first showcased with visionOS in the Apple Vision Pro last year. Gurman notes that even visionOS will receive some user interface adjustments to further align its design with Apple’s overarching goal of visual harmony across all platforms.
As the countdown to WWDC continues, all eyes will be on Apple as it prepares to unveil these exciting updates. The main keynote is scheduled to commence at 10 AM Pacific Time on June 9.
