Apple users across the United States can now apply for their share of a significant $95 million payout due to a recent class action lawsuit regarding Siri's unintended activations. This settlement aims to compensate those who experienced unintended Siri activations during private conversations between September 17, 2014, and December 31, 2024. A dedicated website has been established to facilitate the distribution of these funds, making it easier for affected Apple device owners to submit their claims.
The payout stems from a 2019 class action lawsuit that alleged Apple violated its users' privacy rights by capturing and recording conversations without consent through its Siri voice assistant. The lawsuit claimed that these recordings were shared with third-party quality control contractors, raising significant concerns regarding user privacy and data security. In response to the allegations, Apple issued a formal apology and committed to ceasing the retention of user recordings. However, the company denied further allegations that it allowed advertisers to target consumers based on the data collected from Siri recordings.
In January 2025, Apple agreed to pay $95 million to settle the class action lawsuit, providing financial relief to affected users. Applications for this settlement are open until July 2, 2025. Eligible Apple device owners can submit claims for up to five Siri-enabled devices, including the iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Mac, HomePod, iPod touch, and Apple TV. To qualify, users must swear under oath that the Siri assistant was unintentionally activated on each device.
If a claim is approved, the settlement payouts are capped at $20 per device. Apple device owners who have already received a Claim Identification Code and Confirmation Code are in the process of being notified about the settlement details. However, it's important to note that anyone who believes they qualify for the settlement can submit an application, even if they have not received a claim notice.
For those impacted by Siri's unintended activations, this is an opportunity to reclaim part of their privacy rights and receive compensation for their experiences. Be sure to check the eligibility requirements and submit your claim before the deadline to secure your share of the settlement.
