Today, reviews have rolled in for Apple’s latest releases, including the M5 iPad Pro, MacBook Pro, and the new Vision Pro. A notable trend continues to emerge as we compare the new M5 iPad Pro and MacBook Pro models: iPad hardware innovation is significantly outpacing that of the Mac. The M5 iPad Pro is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, while the MacBook Pro seems to be lagging behind.
To clarify, this article aims neither to criticize the Mac nor to overly praise the iPad. Both platforms possess unique strengths and weaknesses. On the software side, iPadOS has long been working to catch up to macOS. While iPadOS 26 marks a significant advancement, macOS continues to offer numerous advantages. However, when it comes to hardware, it’s evident that the iPad has become the focal point of Apple’s innovation efforts.
This trend of iPad leading in hardware innovation is not new with the M5 line; it’s a pattern that has persisted for several years. Consider the following examples of distinct hardware features in Apple’s latest M5 products:
Advanced Display Technology: The M5 iPad Pro boasts a superior display system compared to the MacBook Pro. Enhanced Processing Power: The integration of the new N1 chip in the M5 iPad Pro elevates its performance capabilities. Improved Connectivity Options: The M5 iPad Pro includes features that are still absent in the MacBook Pro.Is there a valid reason for the M5 MacBook Pro to fall behind in these aspects? Currently, it seems there isn’t, as the vast majority of these advantages found in the iPad Pro are anticipated to eventually make their way to the Mac.
Rumors suggest that the MacBook Pro is expected to incorporate several upgrades in the near future, including:
OLED Displays: Anticipated to arrive late next year, although the inclusion of tandem OLED displays remains uncertain. Touch Support: Expected to be introduced late next year. Face ID: A feature that may become available in the coming years. Thinner Design: A redesign of the MacBook Pro is anticipated next year. New Wireless Technology: The introduction of Apple’s N-series wireless chip and possibly a C2 modem in the future. The frequent references to “next year” highlight why I find the upcoming M6 MacBook Pro more exciting than any Mac release in a long time. However, for the time being, Mac users are left with more of the same.
The slow rollout of new technology to the MacBook Pro isn’t necessarily a major issue. The Mac remains a mature and stable platform, continuing to serve as an excellent computing option. The M5 MacBook Pro, by all indications, performs admirably. Yet, for reasons unknown, Apple has chosen to equip the M5 iPad Pro with its cutting-edge N1 chip while the MacBook Pro retains older technology. Additionally, the Mac still lacks cellular options, despite Apple’s advancements in 5G modem technology.
Whether Apple has valid reasons for these choices remains to be seen. What is unmistakable, however, is that the iPad Pro hardware is significantly benefiting from Apple’s latest innovations, far more than the Mac hardware is. If you’re a Mac user, do the hardware advantages of the M5 iPad Pro concern you, or do they not bother you at all? Share your thoughts in the comments.
