At this year's Computex, AMD has officially announced its highly anticipated Zen 5-based Ryzen Threadripper 9000 Series of CPUs, designed specifically for the demanding workstation market. This new lineup includes the flagship Threadripper Pro 9995WX, which boasts an impressive 96 cores and 192 threads, making it a powerhouse for professionals involved in visual effects, simulations, and AI model development.
The Threadripper Pro 9995WX sets a new standard in performance, featuring up to 384MB of L3 cache and a staggering 128 lanes of PCIe Gen 5 connectivity. This enables users to seamlessly pair the processor with multiple GPUs, enhancing their computational capabilities. According to AMD, the Threadripper Pro 9995WX is an astonishing 2.2 times faster than Intel’s 60-core Xeon W9-3595X processor when tested in Cinebench 2024 multi-threaded rendering scenarios.
For those who may not require a 96-core CPU, the Ryzen Threadripper 9000 Series also caters to enthusiasts and creators seeking workstation-like performance. The Ryzen Threadripper 9980X features 64 cores and 128 threads, with a base frequency of 3.2GHz and 320MB of L3 cache. This makes it an attractive option for users wanting exceptional processing power without the need for the top-tier model.
All new Threadripper chips, whether Pro or standard, are designed to operate at a thermal design power (TDP) of 350 watts. Notably, these processors will function on existing motherboards that support the sTR5 socket, following a BIOS update, making the upgrade process more accessible for current users.
The Threadripper 9000 Series and the Pro WX-Series processors are expected to hit the shelves in July. However, AMD has yet to disclose specific pricing details. Given that the previous generation, the 7980X Threadripper CPU, was priced at $4,999 in 2023, it is reasonable to anticipate that these next-generation models will be similarly priced.
As AMD continues to push the boundaries of CPU performance, the Ryzen Threadripper 9000 Series is poised to redefine standards in the workstation market, delivering unparalleled capabilities to professionals and creators alike.
