Early tests of the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT reveal impressive performance metrics, matching the GeForce RTX 4080 while exhibiting superior thermal efficiency. The recent FurMark stress test highlights the GPU's capability to maintain optimal temperatures under load, adding to its growing reputation in the market.
The AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT has been benchmarked once again in the FurMark stress test, confirming previous performance expectations. A user known as 'gaav87' from the AnandTech Forums shared the results, which prominently display the GPU's identity. The OpenGL test was performed at a resolution of 1080p with MSAA turned off, and the GPU endured a 10-minute stress test.
While FurMark is not the definitive tool for comparing GPU performance, it offers more accuracy than some alternatives like Geekbench. The tested sample was a GIGABYTE Radeon RX 9070 XT Gaming OC 16G, a factory-overclocked edition, which achieved a score of 20,732 points (345 FPS). Moreover, the test utilized drivers from the Linux Mesa 25.0 stack, a recent release that officially supports RDNA 4, suggesting the reliability of these results.
The closest comparable score for the GeForce RTX 4080 under similar conditions was 20,702 points (344 FPS) using Windows drivers. Although these scenarios vary slightly, the RX 9070 XT remains competitive. Prior benchmarks demonstrated that the RX 9070 XT consistently holds its own against the RTX 4080, notably in a recent FurMark score comparison where the RX 9070 XT scored 7979 points, closely following the RTX 4080’s 8030 points at 4K resolution.
Beyond performance, the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT impresses with its thermal management. During the benchmark, it barely reached 55°C at full usage, even after a rigorous 10-minute stress test. For those unfamiliar with FurMark, it is a demanding software that typically causes GPUs to exceed 80°C more quickly than other tests. This makes the RX 9070 XT's thermal performance particularly noteworthy.
The RX 50 series is known for decent thermal efficiency, but the new RDNA 4 GPUs like the RX 9070 XT may continue to surpass expectations, offering both high performance and enhanced thermal capabilities.
