An explosion at a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department training facility in East L.A. has led to the heartbreaking loss of three veteran deputies, according to officials from the department. The incident occurred around 7:30 a.m. Friday at the Biscailuz Training Center, located on North Eastern Avenue, prompting a swift response from L.A. County Fire officials who received multiple calls regarding the explosion.
During a news conference, Sheriff Robert Luna expressed his deep sorrow over the incident, stating, “This is unfortunately the largest loss of life for us as the L.A. County Sheriff's Department since 1857.” He was accompanied by other officials, including members of the county Board of Supervisors and representatives from the Los Angeles Police Department, county Fire Department, and California Highway Patrol. Thankfully, there were no other reported injuries from the explosion.
The fallen deputies, who had dedicated their careers to the department, were part of the arson explosives detail. Sheriff Luna referred to them as heroic individuals, mentioning their service lengths of 19, 22, and 33 years. Their commitment to public safety and their specialized training as members of the Special Enforcement Bureau was highlighted, underscoring their expertise in handling such dangerous situations.
The cause of the explosion is currently under investigation, with assistance from the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Sheriff Luna assured the community that there is no ongoing threat, emphasizing that this incident appears to be isolated. The LAPD Bomb Squad was able to render the scene safe shortly before the sheriff's press conference began at 11:45 a.m.
Aerial footage from KCAL News indicates that the explosion occurred in a parking lot filled with large box trucks and patrol SUVs, raising concerns about safety protocols at the training facility. With a voice filled with emotion, Sheriff Luna shared that he had been in contact with the families of the deceased deputies, promising that further notifications would be made later in the day.
The names of the fallen deputies have not yet been released, but Sheriff Luna stated, “They’re the best of the best.” He expressed his profound grief, stating, “These individuals who work in our arson explosive detail have years of training. They are fantastic experts, and I lost three of them today.”
As the investigation unfolds, LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell released a statement expressing condolences on behalf of the entire Los Angeles Police Department. He said, “We stand in solidarity with our Sheriff’s Department colleagues during this incredibly difficult time and we remain ready to assist in any way we can.”
Local elected officials have also shared their sympathies. County Supervisor Hilda Solis stated, “My heart goes out to the families, friends, and colleagues of the three individuals who lost their lives in what appears to have been a devastating explosion.” Supervisor Kathryn Barger added, “My heart is heavy, and my thoughts are with the brave men and women of the Sheriff’s Department during this difficult time.”
District Attorney Nathan Hochman extended his condolences on behalf of the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office, saying, “We grieve alongside you. Their service, sacrifice, and commitment to justice will never be forgotten.” In a show of respect, flags at county buildings were lowered to half-staff.
As the day concluded, a solemn law enforcement procession transported the bodies of the fallen deputies from the training center to the county Medical Examiner's Office, marking a tragic moment in the history of the L.A. County Sheriff's Department.
