In a significant health alert, Savage Pet has announced a recall of several lots of its pet food products due to potential contamination with H5N1, commonly known as bird flu. This precautionary measure affects a total of 66 boxes of 84 oz. chicken and 74 boxes of 21 oz. chicken, all bearing the lot code/best by date of 11152026.
The affected boxes were distributed to various retailers across multiple states, including California, Colorado, New York, Pennsylvania, and Washington. This information was confirmed in an official announcement from the FDA.
The recall follows an incident reported in February, where a cat in Colorado contracted H5N1. Fortunately, the cat received treatment and recovered. Following this event, Colorado State University Laboratory conducted tests on sealed packets of Savage Cat Food, which returned "non-negative" results for the virus. This prompted further testing at the National Veterinary Services Laboratory in Ames, Iowa, for virus isolation.
In response to these findings, the affected product was promptly removed from the market while awaiting final test results. On February 17, Savage Pet took proactive measures by notifying all retailers that might have received the implicated lot code. They were instructed to return these products for proper destruction.
Savage Pet is strongly advising customers against feeding their pets or any animals the recalled products. Furthermore, consumers are urged not to sell or donate the recalled items. If you have purchased any of the affected lot codes, it is essential to return the product to your retailer immediately for proper disposal and to receive a full refund.
For pet owners, this recall serves as a vital reminder to stay informed about the safety of pet food products. Always check for recall announcements and ensure that your pets are not consuming potentially harmful food. Your vigilance can help protect your furry friends from health risks associated with contaminated pet food.
