The CDC's updated travel notice highlights that infected travelers can easily bring measles back to their home communities, posing a risk to those who are unvaccinated or not immune. Measles, which was officially declared eliminated in the U.S. in 2000, is now threatening public health once again. The year 2019 was particularly alarming, with a record 1,274 cases reported. If the current trend continues, 2023 could see even more infections.
The good news is that the MMR vaccine (measles, mumps, and rubella) is effective in preventing the disease. The CDC recommends that all adults have two doses of the MMR vaccine. For infants aged 6 to 11 months who are traveling, an additional dose is advised. However, the vaccine is not recommended for pregnant individuals, children under six months, or those with weakened immune systems. This means that vulnerable populations, including infants, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals, remain at risk.
Dr. Peter Hotez, co-director of the Texas Children's Hospital Center for Vaccine Development, reassures parents that receiving an extra dose of the MMR vaccine for their children is safe. Despite the claims of some public figures, the reality is that vaccines work and have been proven effective for decades. Tragically, this year has already seen deaths attributed to measles, with two children and one adult succumbing to the illness. As travel continues to rise, these numbers may increase, highlighting the critical need for vaccination.
Historically, measles was a leading cause of death among children worldwide, accounting for approximately 3 million deaths annually. Thanks to initiatives like the GAVI Vaccine Alliance, this number has dropped to around 100,000. Nonetheless, the threat remains real, particularly in areas with low vaccination rates. In Texas, for instance, there have been over 90 hospitalizations related to measles, along with two confirmed deaths. Dr. Hotez warns that a healthy lifestyle alone cannot protect children from measles; vaccination is crucial.
