Diego Borella, an assistant director for the much-anticipated fifth season of Emily in Paris, has tragically passed away after collapsing on the set of the Netflix series in Venice, Italy. The incident occurred while the crew was preparing to film a final scene at the iconic Hotel Danieli. Local news outlets report that Borella was pronounced dead shortly after 7 PM on Thursday, prompting a temporary suspension of filming.
A spokesperson for Paramount Television Studios expressed their sorrow in a statement, saying, “We are deeply saddened to confirm the sudden passing of a member of the Emily in Paris production family. Our hearts go out to the individual’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.” The medical team on-site attempted to provide assistance, but unfortunately, Borella succumbed to what is believed to be a sudden heart attack, as reported by La Repubblica.
Before his role on Emily in Paris, Borella had previously contributed his talents to the medical drama DOC – Nelle tue mani (translated as DOC – In Your Hands) in 2022. He was a locally hired third assistant director for the popular Netflix series. His dedication to the craft and the film industry left a mark on those who worked alongside him.
Following this heartbreaking event, production on Emily in Paris resumed on Saturday. The fifth season, which was greenlit last September, began filming in Rome in May. After a successful shooting stint in Italy, the team returned to Paris, with a few days of filming in Venice scheduled to conclude the production process.
Star of the show expressed optimism about the upcoming season, stating, “I think we’ve got a really terrific season coming up. We filmed in Rome for the first four weeks, and that was an exciting experience to be there. Now we’re back in Paris; Emily is definitely back in Paris.” Fans of the series are eagerly awaiting the release of this new season, which promises to deliver the charm and intrigue that Emily in Paris is known for.
