The highly anticipated Stranger Things 5 finale is set to make a splash as it will be available for viewing on the big screen. Beginning on December 31, 2025, at 5 PM PT, fans can catch the series finale in over 350 theaters across the U.S. and Canada. This theatrical release coincides with the global streaming premiere on Netflix, continuing through January 1, 2026.
While it is rare for TV shows to have theatrical screenings, such stunt theatrical engagements are not entirely unprecedented. Netflix previously held screenings of Stranger Things 4: Volume 2 in various North American cities on Stranger Things Day (November 6, 2022), months after its streaming release. This means that both the Season 4 and Season 5 finales of Stranger Things — each running over 2 hours — will enjoy a limited theatrical run.
Similar promotional strategies were employed by HBO, which released select episodes of Game of Thrones in theaters following their TV premieres to generate buzz for DVD releases. However, the simultaneous debut of a TV episode in theaters and on streaming platforms is a novel approach, akin to the day-and-date movie release strategy.
Traditionally, Netflix has been resistant to theatrical distribution, with co-CEO Ted Sarandos describing the theatrical experience as “an outmoded idea for most people.” However, the streaming giant has begun to soften its stance, allowing limited theatrical releases for select films. Recent titles include KPop Demon Hunters (sing-along version), with upcoming releases such as Frankenstein, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, and Chronicles of Narnia.
The creators of Stranger Things, Matt and Ross Duffer, are strong advocates for theatrical releases, which played a significant role in their decision to transition from Netflix to Paramount. In a recent interview with Variety, they expressed their enthusiasm for bringing the series finale to theaters. Despite Netflix’s Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria initially appearing less supportive of the idea, discussions between her, Sarandos, and the Duffers regarding the theatrical release have taken place.
In their announcement regarding the finale's theatrical release, the Duffers shared their excitement, stating, “We’re beyond excited that fans will have the chance to experience the final episode of Stranger Things in theaters — it’s something we’ve dreamed about for years. We’re so grateful to Ted, Bela, and everyone at Netflix for making it happen.” They further noted, “Getting to see it on the big screen, with incredible sound, picture, and a room full of fans, feels like the perfect — dare we say bitchin’ — way to celebrate the end of this adventure.”
As for the release schedule, Stranger Things 5 will debut on Netflix in three parts: Volume 1, featuring Episodes 501-504, will be available on November 26, followed by Volume 2, which includes Episodes 505-507, on December 25. The highly anticipated finale, Episode 508, will premiere on December 31, 2025.
