Spotify has officially rolled out a new feature that allows users to slide into each other's DMs directly within the app. This exciting addition enhances the way users can share and discuss their favorite content—be it songs, podcasts, or audiobooks—without needing to switch to other messaging platforms.
Previously, Spotify users could share their favorite tracks and playlists through various external messaging apps and social networks. However, with the launch of the Messages feature, Spotify has created an internal space dedicated solely to sharing music and recommendations among friends and family. This feature is now available for users aged 16 and older in select markets on mobile devices.
According to Spotify, users expressed a strong desire for a dedicated area to recommend music and podcasts to their friends. The company stated, “Users have told us that they want a dedicated space within the app to share their next favorite song, podcast, or audiobook.” This feedback has driven Spotify to implement the Messages feature, aiming to create more seamless and streamlined connections among users.
While it remains to be seen how many users will actively utilize the Messages feature, Spotify is optimistic that native direct messages will lead to increased engagement on the platform. Spotify encourages users to continue sharing content through popular social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, Snapchat, and TikTok, stating, “Messages on Spotify is designed to complement these integrations, not replace them.”
With the new Messages feature, users can easily share Spotify content and initiate conversations with friends. Users will receive suggestions for individuals to message based on their interactions within Spotify, including those who have participated in Jams, Blends, and Collaborative Playlists, or those sharing a Family or Duo plan.
Moreover, users have the option to accept or reject message requests, as well as block specific accounts from sending them direct messages. Spotify emphasizes that its Terms of Use and Platform Rules against illegal and harmful content apply to Messages, providing users with the ability to report any inappropriate content or accounts.
To ensure a safe messaging environment, Spotify employs “proactive detection technology” to scan messages for unlawful and harmful content. Additionally, a team of moderators will review any reported messages. The Messages feature on Spotify also incorporates “industry-standard encryption” to protect user data both in transit and at rest.
To utilize the Messages feature, users simply need to tap the share icon while listening to a song, podcast, or audiobook in the “Now Playing” view, select a friend, and hit “send.” Once the recipient accepts the message request, they can respond with emojis or text, making it easy to communicate about their favorite content.
To access the Messages feature, users can click on their profile photo located in the top left corner of the Spotify app. With this innovative addition, Spotify is set to enhance user engagement and foster a more interactive community around music and audio content.
