A personal assistant and three former housekeepers have come forward with serious allegations against Smokey Robinson, the iconic Motown singer. The women accuse the legendary artist of sexually assaulting them multiple times during their employment. They have filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles County, claiming they were raped at various residences owned by Robinson in California and Las Vegas.
The anonymous plaintiffs are seeking a staggering $50 million in damages. While their identities remain undisclosed, attorney John W. Harris revealed during a news conference that the women are all Hispanic and were paid below minimum wage. "As low-wage workers in vulnerable positions, they lacked the resources and options necessary to protect themselves from sexual assaults," Harris stated, as reported by The New York Times.
The lawsuit highlights the challenges faced by the women, with three of them expressing fears that reporting Robinson's behavior could jeopardize their immigration status. This aspect underscores the vulnerability of low-wage workers in similar situations, where fear often silences victims of abuse.
Adding to the gravity of the accusations, the lawsuit claims that Robinson's wife, Frances Robinson, was aware of the alleged assaults. Instead of offering support, she is accused of mistreating the women, using racially charged language and continuing a pattern of abuse. The Robinsons are also facing accusations of false imprisonment and numerous labor violations, further complicating the legal landscape of this case.
The women worked for Robinson, who is now 85 years old, over varying periods from 2006 to 2024. One plaintiff detailed a harrowing account, reporting that she was sexually assaulted by the singer at least 23 times between May 2014 and February 2020. These allegations paint a disturbing picture of ongoing abuse within the workplace.
As of now, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office has confirmed that no criminal charges have yet been filed against Robinson. Additionally, a representative for the singer has not responded to requests for comment from publications like Pitchfork.
