During her recent appearance at San Diego Comic-Con, actress Piper Perabo revealed that there has been “some discussion” regarding a sequel to the beloved film Coyote Ugly. Perabo was promoting her new spy-thriller series, Butterfly, alongside co-stars, including Daniel Dae Kim, who not only stars in but also executive produces the upcoming Prime Video series.
Originally released 25 years ago, Coyote Ugly features Perabo in the role of an aspiring songwriter who relocates to New York City to chase her dreams. Along the way, she takes a job at the trendy bar, Coyote Ugly, which has since become iconic. The film boasts a star-studded cast, including Adam Garcia, John Goodman, Maria Bello, Izabella Miko, Tyra Banks, Bridget Moynahan, and Melanie Lynskey.
During her interview with The Hollywood Reporter’s Tiffany Taylor, Perabo discussed the ongoing conversations about a potential sequel. When Taylor inquired about the current status of these discussions, Daniel Dae Kim humorously suggested a sequel title: “Coyote Uglier?” To which Perabo playfully responded, “Coyote-er Ugly?”
Choosing her words carefully, Perabo confirmed, “There has been some discussion about that. Some things are being discussed. I can’t really say, but people that were doing it are talking about some stuff.” This indicates a renewed interest in creating a sequel among the original team.
Perabo continued, “So the conversations are back on, it sounds like,” to which Taylor remarked, “Among the necessary — and some people that were like, well, we don’t necessarily need, they’re like, ‘Oh, well I wanna be in it.’ So, there’s a lot of cooks in the kitchen right now, but things are moving around.” This suggests that multiple key players are eager to participate in the project.
When asked if a script for the sequel exists, Perabo remained coy: “I can’t say anything about that, but I will say that people that were integral to making it are in communication about how to do something more.” This leaves fans hopeful for a potential continuation of the Coyote Ugly legacy.
Coyote Ugly was a commercial success, grossing approximately $114 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo, not adjusted for inflation. Despite receiving mixed reviews upon release, the film has grown to become a cult classic over the years. It also gave rise to the hit song by LeAnn Rimes, “Can’t Fight the Moonlight,” written by Diane Warren, further solidifying its place in pop culture.
As fans eagerly await further news about the potential Coyote Ugly sequel, Perabo's insights at Comic-Con suggest that the dream of revisiting this iconic story may not be far from reality.
