The highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 is on track to achieve what analysts believe will be the biggest console launch in history. Recent predictions indicated that Nintendo aimed to produce between 6 and 8 million units of this new console by its launch in June. However, emerging insights suggest that the overwhelming success of the pre-order campaign in Japan could significantly boost these numbers.
According to Pelham Smithers from the Japan-focused equity research firm Pelham Smithers Associates, the robust pre-order figures indicate that the Nintendo Switch 2 could see around 6.6 million pre-orders globally. Smithers highlights that Japan accounts for approximately a third of the global Switch installation base, which amplifies the potential success of the console upon its release. This pre-order trend suggests a remarkable interest that could redefine expectations for new console launches.
Currently, the record for the largest console launches belongs to Sony, with both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 reportedly selling 4.5 million units within their first two months. It's important to note that the PlayStation 5 encountered persistent stock shortages during its inaugural year, which implies that it could have surpassed the PlayStation 4's figures had more units been available.
Recently, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa expressed concerns that a “significant number” of players in Japan might miss out on the Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders. This comes after a staggering 2.2 million applications were submitted for Nintendo's My Nintendo pre-order lottery, highlighting the fierce competition for securing a unit.
This week, pre-orders for the Nintendo Switch 2 officially opened in the United States, though many players reported ongoing difficulties with the online ordering system. In contrast, pre-orders in the UK and Europe commenced earlier this month, following the exciting Nintendo Switch 2 Direct presentation that unveiled key details about the console and its launch titles.
Set to launch on June 5, the Nintendo Switch 2 will debut alongside the much-anticipated title, Mario Kart World. Recently, a dedicated Mario Kart World Direct provided fans with a wealth of information regarding the game, including new courses, items, characters, and outfits, further fueling excitement for the Nintendo Switch 2's launch.
