Marvel's 'Thunderbolts' Dominates Box Office Again, Surpassing $100 Million!
Marvel's 'Thunderbolts' tops the box office again, nearing $130 million, while 'Sinners' impressively hits $200 million. Summer competition heats up!

Weekend Box Office Report: Marvel's Thunderbolts Maintains Dominance

This weekend, Thunderbolts is set to remain at the top of the domestic box office charts, showing impressive resilience with no major new releases until the upcoming horror sequel, Final Destination: Bloodlines. On Friday, Marvel's Thunderbolts grossed an additional $9 million, contributing to its remarkable success. The Disney superhero ensemble film has now surpassed the significant milestone of $100 million in North America and is projected to exceed $130 million by the end of the weekend. This performance represents a moderate 53% drop from its opening weekend, indicating strong audience engagement.

Positive Reception Boosts Thunderbolts Performance

With much stronger reviews and a favorable reception from fans, this latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has demonstrated greater staying power compared to its predecessor, Captain America: Brave New World, which saw a staggering 68% drop in its second weekend back in February. In comparison to other recent MCU films that focus on lesser-known characters, Thunderbolts is performing well, tracking between Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings ($119 million through its first eight days) and Eternals ($99 million within the same timeframe).

If current projections hold true, Thunderbolts will achieve one of the top eight second-weekend percentage drops among the 36 MCU entries, a notable accomplishment. However, with a substantial production budget of $180 million and an additional $100 million in marketing expenses, it remains crucial for Thunderbolts to sustain its relevance as summer competition intensifies.

Sinners Crosses Major Milestone

Meanwhile, the film Sinners added another $6.5 million on Friday, positioning it to surpass $200 million in domestic earnings by Saturday. This achievement marks a remarkable milestone for an original production and places the Warner Bros. release ahead of Captain America: Brave New World, ranking as the second-highest-grossing North American release of 2025, trailing only behind A Minecraft Movie.

Sinners is also expected to maintain a modest drop in its fourth weekend and is on track to surpass Wedding Crashers ($209 million) to enter the top 20 highest-grossing R-rated North American films of all time, with further climbs anticipated.

A Minecraft Movie Continues Strong Performance

In third place, A Minecraft Movie grossed an additional $1.9 million on Friday, reflecting a modest decline of just 37% from its totals last week. Now in its sixth weekend, the adaptation of the popular Mojang video game has reached a domestic total of $402 million and is nearing the prestigious milestone of $900 million globally by Saturday.

Other Notable Releases

Amazon MGM's The Accountant 2 is projected to take fourth place, adding approximately $1.67 million on Friday. Currently in its third weekend, Ben Affleck's action sequel is expected to surpass a domestic total of $50.8 million by Sunday. However, it is lagging nearly 20% behind the original 2016 Accountant, which is disappointing given the higher production costs this time around.

Projected for fifth place, IFC is launching the slasher film Clown in a Cornfield in 2,277 theaters under its horror-focused Shudder label. The film grossed about $1.69 million on Friday, including previews. Following positive reviews from its SXSW Festival premiere in March, the film received a middling “C+” grade from CinemaScore, indicating mixed audience reactions.

New Releases Struggle to Gain Traction

Outside the top five, Lionsgate is releasing the action film Shadow Force, starring Kerry Washington and Omar Sy, in 2,170 venues. The film earned approximately $720,000 on Friday, but reviews have been largely negative, reflected in a mediocre “B” grade from CinemaScore. Similarly, Vertical has released the airplane thriller Fight or Flight, which earned about $990,000 on its opening day. Critics have responded positively, but audience reception has been lukewarm, earning a “C+” CinemaScore.

Lastly, Briarcliff is debuting the negatively reviewed musical Juliet & Romeo in 1,350 theaters, which managed to earn a disappointing estimate of about $96,000 on Friday.

As the box office landscape evolves, all eyes will be on how Thunderbolts continues to fare against incoming competition and whether films like Sinners can maintain their impressive trajectories.
