Nearly three decades after the original film, Happy Gilmore, delighted audiences, a highly anticipated sequel titled Happy Gilmore 2 is on its way. The film's co-star, Julie Bowen, who reprises her role as Virginia Venit, expressed her surprise at being invited back for this sequel. The first movie, which starred Adam Sandler as the unconventional golf hero, introduced Bowen as the pro golf tour PR director and Happy's love interest.
The official trailer for Happy Gilmore 2 was unveiled during Netflix’s Tudum event on Saturday. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Bowen candidly shared her initial thoughts upon hearing about the sequel. She admitted, “I thought, ‘Well I won’t be in it.'” Bowen humorously reflected on the time that has passed, suggesting that after 30 years, it was reasonable to assume that Virginia Venit would no longer be in Happy's life. “It’s been 30 years, he’s got a hottie. He’s got some little bitty on the side, like a cart girl,” she joked.
Interestingly, Bowen revealed that her children were the first to inform her about the potential sequel. Her 18-year-old child mentioned rumors that Sydney Sweeney was joining the cast as a cart girl, which turned out to be unfounded. Bowen laughed at the notion, saying, “I went, I’m hurt and I so respect that move. Of course, why wouldn’t you?” When she finally received the call confirming her return, she was pleasantly shocked, exclaiming, “Are you sure? Come on.”
In addition to Bowen's return, Happy Gilmore 2 promises a fresh lineup of talent. The film will feature appearances from notable stars such as Bad Bunny, Margaret Qualley, Benny Safdie, Travis Kelce, Kym Whitley, and even Eminem. Bowen, a self-proclaimed superfan of Bad Bunny, shared her excitement about working with him on set. “Seeing Bad Bunny on set, I was just like, ‘Oh, I can’t actually look you in the eye, I’m going to have to walk away,’ and I did. I think he was offended and I had to circle back and now I made it worse,” she teased, highlighting her humorous side and relatable nervousness around celebrity encounters.
Fans of the original film and newcomers alike can look forward to the release of Happy Gilmore 2, which will start streaming on Netflix on July 25. With a blend of nostalgic charm and fresh faces, this sequel is set to capture the hearts of audiences once again. Don’t miss out on the fun and excitement as Happy returns to the screen!
