According to The New York Times, Diddy is not donning any restraints or a prison uniform; instead, he appears in a casual sweater and slacks, presenting a composed demeanor as he prepares for the proceedings ahead.
The trial is presided over by Judge Arun Subramanian, who has held this position for approximately two years. Nominated by former President Joe Biden, Judge Subramanian received confirmation through a 59-23 vote in the US Senate. New York Senator Chuck Schumer was instrumental in recommending Subramanian to Biden, emphasizing the need for more judges like him in the court system. Notably, Subramanian is the first South Asian judge in the Southern District of New York, being the son of Indian immigrants. His engaging demeanor was evident during jury selection, where he humorously compared document lengths to that of Lord of the Rings.
Prior to his judicial appointment in 2022, Judge Subramanian built a successful private law practice and even clerked for the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, showcasing his impressive legal background.
The court is currently in the process of finalizing the jury, needing to narrow down the panel to 12 jurors and six alternates. This crucial selection process began roughly 30 minutes ago. Once the jury is officially sworn in, we can expect opening statements from both legal teams, followed by the calling of the first witness.
Outside the courthouse earlier today, Holly Baird, a representative for Diddy, shared that his entire family is present to support him during this significant moment. Baird conveyed that Diddy is feeling optimistic and eager to present his side of the story. Notably, Diddy’s mother, Janice Combs, was seen arriving at the courthouse, demonstrating the family's united front.
