David Hayter remains a beloved figure in the gaming community, recognized for his iconic portrayal of Solid Snake in the renowned Metal Gear Solid series. Recently, he expressed a desire to re-record some of his lines for the upcoming remake, Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, which revives the classic 2004 PS2 game. In an exclusive interview with Inverse, Hayter shared his thoughts on the opportunity to enhance his performance with the skills he has developed over the years.
In the interview, Hayter humorously noted, "I do feel that I'm a little better of an actor now than I was then." He acknowledged that while his original performance was satisfactory at the time, he believes he could infuse the remake with a deeper understanding of the character. "I would have loved to bring some of the knowledge that I've picked up over the past 20 years to it," he added, highlighting his growth as an actor.
Despite not being part of Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, Hayter remains optimistic about future opportunities within the Metal Gear Solid franchise. He stated, "Anytime they ask me to be Snake, I'm in," indicating his unwavering passion for the character. Hayter has lent his voice to Snake in the first four mainline entries of the series, as well as several spin-offs, making it a defining role in his career. He elaborated on the complexity and depth of Snake and Big Boss, expressing his eagerness to return to the role in any upcoming projects.
In 2013, the landscape of the Metal Gear Solid series changed when Hayter was replaced by Keifer Sutherland—known for his roles in 24, Stand By Me, and The Lost Boys—for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. This transition was challenging for Hayter, as he had grown deeply connected to the character. However, he recently shared that he has come to terms with the changes introduced by The Phantom Pain, showcasing his resilience and dedication to the franchise.
Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is set to launch on August 28 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, bringing a modern twist to the classic gameplay. Players can look forward to a new online multiplayer mode called Fox Hunt, which is expected to debut in the fall. However, it's worth noting that this mode will not support cross-play, a factor that players should keep in mind as they anticipate the game's release.
