On Friday night, Bruce Springsteen made a memorable appearance at the Telluride Film Festival for the world premiere of his unconventional and deeply emotional biopic, titled “Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere.” In front of an audience filled with global cinephiles, affluent locals—including the likes of Oprah Winfrey—and industry elites, Springsteen personally delivered the film, which is produced by 20th Century Studios.
During the event, Julie Huntsinger, the executive director of Telluride, fought back tears as she introduced Scott Cooper, the film’s director and script adapter. Cooper shared poignant insights about his personal relationship with Springsteen, recounting how the legendary rocker had sheltered him, his wife, and children during the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles last January. “I want my house back,” Springsteen humorously quipped in his brief remarks before the screening.
The film features a remarkable cast, including Jeremy Allen White, known for his Emmy-winning role in “The Bear,” and Jeremy Strong, who plays Springsteen's longtime manager, Jon Landau. Cooper elaborated on his choice to cast White in the lead role, explaining that the actor possessed two essential qualities he associated with Springsteen: humility and swagger. “They don’t teach swagger at Juilliard,” Cooper noted, prompting laughter from the audience at the Werner Herzog Theater.
The audience's engagement was palpable, with many singing along as White, embodying Springsteen, passionately performed “Born to Run.” His portrayal not only showcased his vocal talents but also delved into complex themes such as childhood trauma and the gradual onset of crippling depression. The film also features Stephen Graham, who portrayed Springsteen's father, delivering an intimidating performance that resonated with viewers.
In addition to White and Strong, the film boasts a talented ensemble cast, including Paul Walter Hauser as guitar tech Mike Batlan, who provided comic relief throughout the film. Other notable cast members include Gaby Hoffmann, David Krumholtz, Marc Maron, Johnny Cannizzaro, Harrison Gilbertson, Chris Jaymes, and Matthew Anthony Pellicano, who portrays young Bruce Springsteen.
“Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere” is set for a wide release on October 24. The film has already garnered significant buzz, particularly following its premiere at the Telluride Film Festival, and it promises to be a must-see for fans of both Springsteen and compelling cinema.
