Ukraine's top military commander, Oleksandr Syrsky, recently confirmed that Ukrainian forces are still engaged in defending a small area of territory within Russia, which they successfully captured nearly a year ago. This significant military operation began in August 2024, when Ukraine launched a surprise incursion into the Kursk region, seizing over 1,000 square kilometers (approximately 386 square miles) of Russian land.
Despite Russia's claims of having regained full control over the Kursk region, Commander Syrsky stated on Sunday that Ukrainian forces continue to maintain control over approximately 90 square kilometers (around 56 square miles) of this contested territory. He emphasized that there are currently around 10,000 Russian troops actively attempting to dislodge Ukrainian forces from their positions.
During a recent press briefing, Syrsky reaffirmed Ukraine's commitment to intensifying its military operations against Russian targets. “Of course, we will continue,” he declared, highlighting that the focus of their efforts is on military installations rather than civilian populations. This strategic approach underscores Ukraine's goal of targeting and dismantling military assets to weaken Russia's operational capabilities.
The initial incursion into the Kursk region saw Ukrainian forces capture dozens of villages, effectively establishing a buffer zone. This tactical advantage has been crucial in preventing Russian forces from being deployed in critical areas along the front lines in eastern Ukraine. President Volodymyr Zelensky has lauded the operation for its role in enhancing Ukraine's defensive strategy.
However, the advances made by Ukrainian troops have faced significant setbacks in recent months. Following the initial offensive, Russia quickly reinforced its military presence in the area, deploying thousands of troops, including support from its ally North Korea. Ukrainian forces have encountered fierce resistance, with an estimated 70,000 Russian troops and relentless drone attacks as part of Moscow’s renewed efforts to reclaim lost territory.
