In a devastating series of overnight attacks on September 7, 2023, Kyiv endured a horrific assault that resulted in the deaths of three individuals, including a heart-wrenching loss of an infant. The assault injured 18 others and caused significant damage to numerous buildings within the capital, notably the government headquarters, as reported by Ukrainian officials.
According to Kyiv's Mayor, Vitali Klitschko, the onslaught commenced with a barrage of drones, which was swiftly followed by missile strikes. A significant fire erupted at the government building located in the city center post-attack. Additionally, Klitschko reported that an elderly woman lost her life in a bomb shelter situated in the tranquil Darnytskyi district, which is located east of the Dnipro River.
The state emergency services indicated that a fire broke out on two of the four floors of a residential building that was targeted in the drone attack, leading to partial structural destruction. In the Sviatoshynskyi district, several floors of a nine-storey residential building were also reported as partially destroyed. Falling debris from the drones ignited fires in a 16-storey apartment building, along with two additional nine-storey buildings, as highlighted by Mayor Klitschko.
Images shared on social media by emergency officials depicted smoke pouring from the apartment buildings, some of which had experienced partial collapses and crumbling facades. The visible devastation underscored the severity of the attacks and the urgent need for recovery efforts.
Timur Tkachenko, the head of Kyiv's military administration, condemned the attacks, asserting that Russia was intentionally targeting civilian areas. This sentiment reflects the ongoing conflict's tragic toll on innocents, as both sides continue to deny targeting civilians amidst the chaos of war. The full-scale invasion of Ukraine initiated by Russia in February 2022 has resulted in thousands of civilian casualties.
