Students and residents of Providence expressed their frustration over the apparent lapses in the university's security measures. Li Ding, a student at the nearby Rhode Island School of Design, voiced discontent, stating, “The fact that we’re in such a surveillance state but that wasn’t used correctly at all is just so deeply frustrating.”
In response to the shooting, Ding is among hundreds of students who have signed a petition advocating for increased security across campus buildings. Many students believe that the university must take more proactive measures to protect against threats like active shooters. “I think honestly, the students are doing a more effective job at taking care of each other than the police,” Ding remarked, highlighting the community's concern over safety.
Kristy dosReis, the chief public information officer for the Providence Police Department, emphasized that the investigation remained active despite the release of the initial suspect. “The investigation continued as the scenes were still active. Nothing was cleared,” dosReis stated.

Providence’s emergency alert system, which transitioned from a mobile app to a web-based platform in March, has also come under scrutiny. Many residents were unaware of the change, leading to confusion during the shooting incident. Emely Vallee, a local resident, reported receiving no alerts and relied instead on messages from friends and news updates. Vallee was unaware that the city’s 311 app had been phased out, leaving her uninformed during a critical time.
Hailey Souza, a manager at a nearby smoothie shop, described the moments leading up to the shooting as deceptively normal. After witnessing the chaos unfold, she expressed frustration at not receiving any emergency alerts from the university. “Nothing,” Souza lamented, underscoring the gaps in communication that left many feeling vulnerable.
