Will Apple Finally Embrace Live Events Again?
The upcoming 'Awe Dropping' event sparks speculation on whether Apple will shift back to live presentations. What can we expect this time around?

Apple's Pre-Recorded Events: A Shift in Presentation Style

To say that Apple’s pre-recorded events are divisive is an understatement. What initially started as a temporary solution during the pandemic has now become the company's standard method for announcing new products. Meanwhile, competitors have largely returned to live presentations, leaving many to wonder if Apple will follow suit. With the upcoming “Awe Dropping” event, Apple has a unique opportunity to revisit the live event format. The big question is: will they take it?

Apple's Preference for Pre-Recorded Events

There is no doubt that Apple has been doubling down on pre-recorded events. This format allows the company to maintain complete control over the presentation, eliminating any chances of flukes, bugs, or clunky demonstrations. Personally, I've never been a fan of the pre-recorded style. However, the recent events featuring San Francisco landmarks felt more engaging and refreshing compared to previous presentations, which often relied on an endless series of overproduced transitions at Apple Park.

The Diminishing Impact of Pre-Recorded Presentations

Despite the improved aesthetics, it's difficult to deny that, aside from the Scary Fast event, many of these presentations have begun to blend together. This redundancy has diminished the overall impact of the announcements being made. Notably, the text in this week’s event press invitation mirrors past iPhone events, but there is one significant difference: we have not seen any recent leaks regarding Apple recording the upcoming presentation at Apple Park. While this may not mean much, it offers a glimmer of hope for those expecting more than just a reiteration of the iPhone 17, which is essentially a redo of the iPhone 16 event, and so forth.

The Importance of Live Audiences

It’s crucial to note that hosting a live event doesn’t necessarily mean a return to the classic Stevenote format. However, there is a distinct value in having a live audience react to new products or features announced from the stage. This aspect has been conspicuously absent from Apple’s recent events. Unfortunately, I’m skeptical that the Awe Dropping event will change this trend. Yet, I remain hopeful that Apple has something more engaging planned than yet another meticulously produced video that appears to be more enjoyable to create than to watch.
