On Wednesday, WhatsApp unveiled its latest innovation, an artificial intelligence tool named “Writing Help.” This new feature is designed to enhance message writing by making it clearer, more professional, and easier to compose directly within the app. Users can simply type a message, tap a pencil-shaped icon, and receive suggestions to improve the tone, style, or clarity of their communication. This feature operates similarly to well-known tools like ChatGPT, but it is seamlessly integrated into WhatsApp itself.
According to Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, the “Writing Help” tool operates using a proprietary technology known as “Private Processing.” This technology ensures that user requests are encrypted and sent anonymously to Meta’s servers. Importantly, Meta asserts that neither WhatsApp, Meta, nor any third party can access or store the content of users' messages. Suggestions generated by the tool are returned to the user’s device without leaving any digital trace.
Meta has emphasized its commitment to user privacy, stating that no data from the “Writing Help” tool is stored on its servers. As a result, neither the original messages nor the AI-generated suggestions can be linked to any specific user, and company employees cannot read them. To activate this feature, users must enable Private Processing in their app settings. Once this is done, a pencil icon will appear next to the text input field, allowing users to initiate the rewriting process.
The “Writing Help” tool offers users the ability to choose from various rewriting styles, including professional, humorous, supportive, or error correction. After selecting a style, the assistant generates multiple versions of the original message. Users can then decide whether to keep their original message or adopt one of the suggested versions. Notably, recipients of these messages will not be informed if the content was rewritten using the tool, maintaining the sender's privacy.
This innovative feature reflects WhatsApp's expanding role beyond personal messaging. With a growing number of users utilizing the app for business purposes, including through WhatsApp Business, Meta aims to assist users in sounding more professional—particularly in conversations conducted in non-native languages. The tool also serves as a quick solution for correcting typos and grammar mistakes, enhancing overall communication effectiveness.
Initially, the “Writing Help” tool was tested with a select group of users and is now officially rolling out in English for both Android and iOS users in the United States and other countries. Meta has announced plans to expand support to additional languages and regions later this year. However, users in Israel will have to wait for the launch of the feature in Hebrew, as no specific date for local availability has been announced.
