At Google I/O 2023, the tech giant unveiled its ambitious plans to integrate its advanced AI chatbot, Gemini, into various platforms, including vehicles. Volvo has eagerly stepped forward to be among the first automakers to adopt this cutting-edge technology. As a pioneer in embracing the built-in Android Automotive operating system, Volvo is expanding its collaboration with Google to incorporate Gemini across its entire model lineup.
With the integration of Gemini, Volvo aims to provide drivers with the ability to engage in more natural conversations about their vehicles. This includes functionalities such as language translation, navigational assistance, and the capacity to locate specific destinations. Moreover, drivers can ask Gemini questions directly related to their vehicle’s user manual, significantly reducing their cognitive load and allowing them to maintain focus on the road.
Earlier this month, Google announced that Gemini would soon be available for cars compatible with Android Auto, its highly popular phone mirroring application. While Android Auto users can expect access to Gemini in the coming weeks, those with vehicles equipped with Android Automotive—branded as "Google built-in"—will have to wait until later this year for the same capabilities.
Both drivers and passengers will leverage Gemini to send texts, obtain directions, play music, and perform all the tasks that Google Assistant traditionally supports. The key distinction is the transition from using mechanical commands to enjoying a more fluid interaction through Gemini’s natural language processing capabilities.
Volvo will also act as one of Google’s reference hardware platforms for the development and testing of future automotive technologies. This strategic partnership ensures that Volvo vehicles will be among the first to receive new features and updates from Google before they are rolled out to the broader Android ecosystem. According to Alwin Bakkenes, head of global software engineering at Volvo Cars, “Through this partnership with Google, we are able to bring the very latest features and capabilities from the leading consumer ecosystem into our products first.”
Volvo has maintained a close working relationship with Google over the years, already reaping rewards from product updates like high-definition maps, integrated YouTube access, and voice-controlled HVAC systems. Notably, Polestar, which was once Volvo’s performance subbrand, pioneered the introduction of cars equipped with the native Android Automotive OS.
At this year’s Google Developer Conference, held at the Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, California, the spotlight was firmly on Gemini. The automotive sector is emerging as a vital platform for this innovative chatbot, which faces the unique challenge of guiding a two-ton vehicle through complex environments. Google is positioning Gemini as an integral component of the vehicle’s operating system, facilitating seamless integration with navigation apps.
Ben Sagmoe, a Developer Relations Engineer, elaborated on this integration on the Android Developers Blog, stating that “Navigation apps can integrate with Gemini using three core intent formats, allowing you to start navigation, display relevant search results, and execute custom actions, such as enabling users to report incidents like traffic congestion using their voice.”
As Volvo and Google continue to innovate together, the automotive landscape is poised for a significant transformation driven by AI technology, promising a safer and more intuitive driving experience for all.
