One of the most notable introductions in the Pixel Watch 4 is its innovative charging dock, which features new charging contacts located on the side of the watch. While these exposed “pins” may disrupt the aesthetic we have grown accustomed to over the years, they are surprisingly less intrusive in person than initially anticipated. Here, we take a closer look at how these contacts appear across each color variant of the Pixel Watch 4.
Google’s Pixel Watch series has seen a rapid evolution in its charging systems, now entering its third iteration in just four generations. The original model utilized a Qi-based wireless charging puck, which was later replaced by a pin-based system in the Pixel Watch 2, providing a significant speed enhancement. This pin-based system continued with the Pixel Watch 3, but now it is being updated once again. The new charger for the Pixel Watch 4 shifts the charging contacts to the side of the watch rather than underneath, marking a significant design change.
The new charging contacts on the Pixel Watch 4 are designed in a uniform silver and gold hue, surrounded by a distinct black border. This means that while the pins are visible, they don’t dominate the overall look of the watch. On the gold Pixel Watch 4 case, for instance, the pins are subtly integrated into the design, although the contrasting black border ensures they are not entirely overlooked. Interestingly, this black border allows the pins to blend in more seamlessly when viewed from the side of the black case.
When it comes to the other color options, the “Moonstone” and silver cases present a similar scenario, where the black border tends to stand out more than the actual contacts. However, it’s important to note that when the watch is worn on the wrist, the charging contacts are not particularly noticeable. This is a relief for many, as the potential for these design elements to detract from Google’s otherwise striking and unique aesthetic was a concern.
Another crucial factor that plays into this design is the stunning domed Actua 360 display featured on the Pixel Watch 4. The display commands attention, allowing the charging contacts to fade into the background, making them less of a focal point. This balance between functionality and design is one of the many reasons the Pixel Watch 4 continues to attract interest.
