It's no secret that Microsoft is officially ending support for Windows 10 in October. The tech giant is actively encouraging users to upgrade to Windows 11, even offering a free upgrade option for current Windows 10 users. However, many individuals prefer to remain on Windows 10, whether due to compatibility issues with newer hardware or simply a desire to avoid the AI-centric features of Windows 11. Additionally, some users may be stuck with older devices that don't meet the system requirements for Windows 11.
If you find yourself in this category, there are two ways to secure another year of updates for Windows 10 at no cost through Microsoft's Extended Security Updates (ESU) program. This program will provide guaranteed security updates until October 2026, giving you additional time to either transition to Windows 11 or consider purchasing a new PC.
Initially, Microsoft planned to charge users $30 to enroll in the ESU program, but they reversed this decision following user backlash. Now is the time to take advantage of this offer, but keep in mind that action must be taken before October 14, 2025.
To enroll in the ESU program, you may receive a notification from Microsoft. If you don't see a notification, follow these steps to locate the offer in your settings menu:
Open your Settings.Navigate to Updates & Security and then select Windows Update.Look for a header indicating that Windows 10 support is ending on October 14, 2025.Under this header, you should find a link to "enroll now" in the ESU program. Click it.A pop-up box will appear with further instructions. If you do not have the option to enroll, ensure your PC is fully updated, reboot it, and try again. Keep in mind that Microsoft launched this feature in August 2025, so users without the latest updates may not see it.
Once you access the ESU within Windows 10, you'll be presented with three options to "pay" for the next year of updates:
Cash in 1,000 Microsoft Reward points - This is the simplest option. You can find more information on accumulating points on the Microsoft website.Sync your Windows Backup with OneDrive - You can upgrade for free by syncing your Windows Backup with Microsoft OneDrive. However, you may need to purchase additional cloud storage space.Pay $30 for the extended Windows 10 updates - This option remains available as originally planned, providing a straightforward path to secure another year of updates.Given that you still have some time, accumulating Microsoft Rewards points may be your most advantageous option.
The Extended Security Updates will be available for exactly one year. Microsoft confirms that updates will continue through October 13, 2026, after which Windows 10 users will be left without support. It's important to note that the ESU updates will consist solely of security updates, and will not include any new features or customer-requested non-security updates. Additionally, technical support will be limited to license activation and installation issues.
In summary, the ESU program offers essential security updates, but users won't receive any additional features unless they decide to upgrade to Windows 11. This gives you an extra year to evaluate your options before making a final decision.
