Nearly a decade after transforming how users capture life’s fleeting moments, Snapchat has announced a significant change to its popular Memories feature. Last week, the company revealed that it will now cap free Memories storage at 5GB. Users who exceed this limit will need to either export their content or subscribe to one of Snapchat's new Memories Storage plans to retain their cherished Snaps.
According to an email sent to TechCrunch, Snapchat's introductory storage plan provides up to 100GB of space for just $1.99 per month. For those who subscribe to Snapchat+, an enhanced experience will offer up to 250GB of storage for $3.99 per month. Additionally, Snapchat Platinum users can enjoy a substantial 5TB of storage for $15.99 monthly. Users who do not opt for a storage plan and exceed the 5GB limit will see their oldest Snaps preserved, while the most recent ones will be automatically deleted to stay within the allowed storage.
In a bid to ease the transition, Snapchat is granting users a temporary grace period of 12 months for any Memories exceeding the 5GB limit. However, many users are proactively opting to export their Memories rather than subscribe to a paid plan. Below, we outline two effective methods to preserve your Snapchat Memories.
One of the simplest ways to save your Snapchat Memories is by downloading them directly to your device's camera roll. This process can be conducted via the app, but keep in mind that it allows for exports in batches of 100, which can be time-consuming if you have a large collection of Snaps. Here’s how to do it:
Open the Snapchat app and tap the “Memories” icon located next to the camera button. Select the “Select” option in the top-right corner. Choose up to 100 Memories you wish to keep. Tap the “Export” button that appears on the bottom right of your screen. Choose “Download” to save them to your camera roll. Repeat this process for additional batches of 100 Memories. If you prefer a more straightforward method to save all your Memories without the hassle of exporting them in batches, Snapchat provides a “Download My Data” feature. This tool allows you to request your entire Memories archive, which will be sent to your email in a .zip file. Follow these steps:
Open the Snapchat app and go to your Profile. Tap the Settings icon located in the top right corner. Scroll down to find the “My Data” option. Select the options for Memories, HTML Files, and JSON Files. (Deselect other options unless you want additional information, such as chat history.) Tap “Next.” When asked to choose a date range for the export, select “All Time.” Confirm your email address. Tap “Submit.”The time it takes to receive your data may vary based on the amount of content stored in your account. By following these methods, you can ensure your precious Snapchat Memories are preserved, regardless of the new storage limitations.
