Sennheiser, a leader in the audio industry, is expanding its legacy in the realm of wireless headphones with the introduction of the HDB 630. Building on the success of its Momentum 4 Wireless over-ear headphones, Sennheiser is now targeting audiophiles with its first high-resolution wireless model, derived from the renowned HD 600 wired headphones. This innovative product promises to blend the superior sound quality of the HD6 series with the portability and convenience of the Momentum line.
One of the standout features of the Sennheiser HDB 630 is the inclusion of a BTD 700 USB-C Bluetooth transmitter. This small but powerful device enhances the listening experience by enabling high-resolution audio streaming to smartphones and tablets that may not inherently support the advanced aptX HD codecs. With the ability to stream music at an impressive 24-bit/96kHz quality using the aptX Adaptive codec, users can enjoy superior sound quality that surpasses standard Bluetooth capabilities.
Sennheiser notes that only about 16% of smartphone hardware currently supports native wireless high-resolution audio. However, with the BTD 700 included in the box, the HDB 630 can deliver this high-quality experience to approximately 80% of smartphone models simply by connecting through their USB Type-C port. Additionally, the transmitter intelligently adapts to different environments, adjusting the resolution to maintain a stable Bluetooth connection, even in congested areas.
The Sennheiser HDB 630 headphones are engineered to provide a remarkable listening experience, boasting a claimed frequency range of 6Hz to 40kHz. They feature refined 42mm drivers, designed for optimal airflow behind the transducer, which enhances sound quality while maintaining a compact form factor. The headphones have undergone meticulous audiophile tuning, resulting in a smooth response across the upper midrange and lower treble frequencies. For those who prefer a wired connection, the headphones support full 24-bit/96kHz resolution with included USB-C and 3.5mm audio cables.
Equipped with Adaptive ANC (Active Noise Cancellation), the HDB 630 effectively blocks out distractions while preserving audio clarity and dynamics. Users can expect an impressive battery life of up to 45 hours with ANC activated and high-resolution streaming. If the ANC is turned off and listening to non-hi-res codecs, the battery life extends to an astounding 60 hours.
The listening experience can be further tailored through Sennheiser's Smart Control Plus app, which offers a detailed parametric equalizer and crossfeed functions. The standard five-band equalizer allows for basic adjustments, while the new parametric equalizer provides audiophiles with extensive flexibility to shape their sound profile. Users can even perform A/B comparisons to analyze the effects of their adjustments, enhancing the overall experience.
Inspired by Sennheiser's flagship HE 1 headphones, the crossfeed setting digitally blends left and right audio channels, making it especially beneficial for classic mono recordings or hard-panned mixes. This feature offers a more natural, speaker-like presentation that can be easier on the ears.
The HDB 630 features a closed-back design and ergonomic elements inspired by the Momentum 4 Wireless. The earcups are crafted to resist fingerprint marks, ensuring a sleek appearance. Additionally, the headphones are equipped with Japanese Protein Leatherette ear cushions, designed for comfort and durability during extended listening sessions.
Sennheiser's Senior Product Manager, Wee Hong Kuan, stated, “We set out to deliver a compelling option for audiophiles who want to maintain the sound quality they expect from wired headphones while enjoying the freedom of wireless listening. The HDB 630 provides a unique combination of fidelity and customization straight out of the box.”
The Sennheiser HDB 630 headphones are priced at £399.90 / $499.95 / €499.90, with pre-orders now open and global shipping set to commence on October 21st. This price point marks a step up from the Momentum 4's launch cost of £300 / $349.95 / AU$549.95. The HDB 630 will face stiff competition from premium rivals such as the Sony WH-1000XM6 and Bowers & Wilkins Px7 S3, both of which have received five-star ratings.
