Recently, Samsung has taken significant steps to enhance security for Galaxy phone users by encouraging them to enable various anti-theft features. In a promising development for the Android ecosystem, Google is reportedly working on an innovative feature that could allow a smartwatch to automatically lock a connected phone when it is left behind. This feature may soon be available for future models of Galaxy Watches.
A recent report from Android Authority reveals that Google is developing a feature that will automatically lock your Android phone whenever your Wear OS smartwatch detects that you have left the phone behind. Code strings related to this feature were discovered in the latest version (3.5.0.758720535) of the Google Pixel Watch app, which includes a message stating, “Phone will lock when it disconnects from your watch, like when it’s far away.”
Currently, the Pixel Watch has the capability to automatically unlock a connected phone when it is within range; however, it lacks the ability to lock the phone if the two devices are out of range. The upcoming feature, still under development, aims to enhance smartphone security by automatically locking your device when you accidentally leave it behind. This means that anyone attempting to access your phone will need to enter the PIN to unlock it.
While this feature has not been officially announced by Google, reports suggest that at least one user has already received it, showcasing the new option within the Google Pixel Watch app for Android phones. As of now, it appears that the feature is not fully operational, but its potential is significant for enhancing mobile security.
Once Google completes the development of this feature, it is expected to be rolled out to all Wear OS smartwatches, including the Samsung Galaxy Watch lineup. There is hope that the functionality to lock and unlock a phone based on whether you are wearing your Galaxy Watch—along with its unlock status—will be included in the upcoming Wear OS 6-based One UI 8 Watch update.
