In response to significant backlash regarding the surge of AI-generated content dominating users’ feeds, Pinterest has announced new tools aimed at providing users with greater control over their browsing experience. As of Thursday, users can now personalize their feeds to limit the visibility of generative AI imagery across select categories. This strategic move comes as the platform strives to enhance user satisfaction and maintain its reputation as a source of inspiration.
Pinterest, widely recognized for its role in helping users discover and bookmark inspirational content, has faced increasing criticism due to the influx of GenAI content. Many users have expressed dissatisfaction with the overwhelming presence of this type of content, leading to discussions in the media questioning whether AI has fundamentally altered Pinterest’s appeal or if it can be restored. Experts note that if left unaddressed, the rise of AI-generated content could jeopardize Pinterest’s reputation and impact its financial performance.
Academic research indicates that GenAI content now constitutes approximately 57% of all online material. This phenomenon presents a challenge for users and platforms alike, as the quality of AI content continues to improve, making it increasingly difficult to differentiate between human and AI-generated creations. In an effort to tackle this issue, Pinterest had previously introduced “AI modified” labels, which appear on images flagged through metadata or detected by Pinterest’s internal systems.
As part of its commitment to enhancing user experience, Pinterest has rolled out consumer-facing tools that allow users to select preferences regarding the visibility of AI-generated content. These new controls can be accessed through the app’s “Settings” menu under the “Refine your recommendations” section. Users will have the flexibility to specify a preference for less GenAI content in certain categories known for AI-generated imagery, including beauty, art, fashion, and home décor. Pinterest has also indicated plans to expand these categories based on user feedback.
To further refine user experience, Pinterest provides an option for users to submit feedback regarding AI imagery while browsing. If a user encounters a Pin that they find unappealing due to its generative AI nature, they can easily access the three-dot overflow menu and choose a category to adjust their preferences. This feedback mechanism not only empowers users but also helps Pinterest better understand community sentiments surrounding AI-generated content.
Pinterest has announced that these new controls will initially be available on the website and Android devices, with plans to roll out the features to iOS users in the coming weeks. Matt Madrigal, Pinterest’s chief technology officer, emphasized the importance of community in the platform's operations, stating, “With our new GenAI controls, we’re empowering people to personalize their Pinterest experience more than ever — striking the right balance between human creativity and AI innovation, and ensuring every feed truly reflects what inspires them most.”
As Pinterest continues to evolve, these changes signal a significant step towards addressing user concerns and enhancing the overall experience on the platform, reaffirming its commitment to providing a space that celebrates creativity and inspiration.
