OpenAI is generating buzz with the announcement of a series of upcoming updates for its viral app for AI-generated videos, Sora. Launched in late September, Sora quickly climbed to the top of the App Store charts, currently holding the No. 1 position in both the U.S. and Canada. As users eagerly await new features, the company is set to enhance the app with innovative video editing tools, character “cameos,” improved social functionalities, and more.
Bill Peebles, the head of Sora, recently shared the exciting news on X, indicating that the new creation tools will be rolling out in the next few days. Among the most anticipated features is the ability for users to create character “cameos” that can depict pets and various objects. This feature allows users to transform their favorite stuffed toys or any other item into unique AI personas.
The term “cameo” refers to Sora's innovative feature where users can generate AI versions of themselves by providing the app with a recorded video as a reference. These personalized cameos can be shared with friends, enabling them to create videos featuring your AI character. Peebles expressed enthusiasm about the potential for users to register a plethora of imaginative cameos, stating, “We’re expecting people to register lots of crazy new cameos with this feature.” To facilitate this, the app will also be updating its generation user interface to showcase the latest trending cameos in real time.
In addition to character cameos, Sora will introduce basic video editing features, starting with the ability to stitch together multiple clips. The development team plans to add more editing tools over time, enhancing the user experience further. Alongside these updates, an improved social experience is on the horizon, which will provide new ways for users to engage with friends. Potential features may include dedicated channels tailored to universities, companies, sports clubs, and other communities.
OpenAI is also addressing user feedback regarding the app's moderation practices. Many users have voiced concerns that the moderation of generated content is overly strict. The company is actively working on reducing excessive moderation while also improving overall app performance. Currently, Sora is available for pre-registration on the Google Play Store, although OpenAI has not disclosed a specific launch date for the Android version. Peebles reassured users that it should be live “soon,” although he did not provide additional details.
Since its launch less than a month ago, third-party app store data from Appfigures indicates that Sora has achieved approximately 2 million downloads. This remarkable figure is particularly noteworthy considering that the app remains invite-only and is currently accessible only in the U.S. and Canada. With these upcoming updates, Sora is poised to solidify its status as a leader in the realm of AI-generated video content.
