Less than two days ago, OpenAI made a significant move in the ongoing battle for the future of the internet with the introduction of ChatGPT Atlas, an innovative AI-powered web browser. This ambitious project aims to challenge the dominance of Google Chrome and redefine the browsing experience for users worldwide. Adam Fry, who leads the Atlas team at OpenAI, stated that the development team is currently “heads down making it better,” hinting at an array of exciting new features on the horizon.
During his announcement, Fry teased that several enhancements are set to roll out soon. One of the highly anticipated features is the introduction of profiles, which will allow users to customize their browsing experience. Additionally, users can look forward to tab groups and an opt-in ad blocker in the near future. These features, familiar to many popular internet browsers, were detailed in a list of “post-launch fixes” that Fry shared on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.
Fry mentioned that most of these improvements should be implemented “over the coming weeks,” although he cautioned that some may take a bit longer to finalize. The enhancements are designed to elevate the user experience with quality-of-life upgrades such as an overflow bookmarks menu and a comprehensive list of shortcuts.
In addition to the new browsing features, significant upgrades are on the way for the browser’s key AI features. One notable improvement involves the agent, which is currently exclusive to ChatGPT Plus and Pro users. This agent can perform tasks on behalf of users and is slated to receive faster response times, a more reliable “pause” function, and enhanced integration with popular products like Google Drive and cloud Excel.
The Ask ChatGPT sidebar, which incorporates OpenAI's flagship chatbot, is also set to become more user-friendly. Users will be able to select different projects or AI models seamlessly without navigating away from their current tasks. Fry encouraged users to share their suggestions, indicating that OpenAI is open to feedback and improvements.
Fry's interactions with user suggestions reveal that OpenAI is already working on features that will allow users to directly copy and insert text from the Ask ChatGPT sidebar. He also noted the potential for the browser to automatically reopen pinned tabs after closing and restarting, a feature many users would find beneficial.
Furthermore, Fry mentioned that the team is addressing some specific, yet unspecified, issues with the password manager 1Password. While there are additional enhancements in the pipeline, some may involve collaborations with partners and were not included in the current list.
