The highly anticipated iPhone Air has finally arrived, and after spending half a day with Apple’s ultra-thin model, my initial impressions are clear: this device feels like the new standard for smartphones. In this detailed review, we'll explore the features, design, and overall user experience of the iPhone Air.
This morning, I had the opportunity to pick up the new ultra-thin iPhone Air. Although I've only used it for a short period, I can already sense that I might miss the advanced Telephoto and Ultra Wide cameras. However, I find it hard to envision returning to a bulkier, heavier model after experiencing the sleekness of the Air. Surprisingly, my first impressions of the iPhone Air differ from my expectations. I anticipated a design that felt futuristic, similar to the iPhone X, but instead, it feels like the new normal in smartphone design.
Throughout the day, I used the iPhone Air for various everyday tasks such as listening to music, browsing the web, and chatting on Slack. As I prepared for travel later in the evening, I noticed that the mental distraction kept me from fully appreciating my new shiny Sky Blue Air. I found myself using it just like any other iPhone, without spending excessive time testing its limits or admiring its features. Surprisingly, the iPhone Air has quickly established itself as my new benchmark for what an iPhone should be.
Instead of feeling like a futuristic device, the iPhone Air has emerged as the default model for the present-day smartphone market. While Apple’s Pro models cater to power users with specialized features, the iPhone Air feels more like the standard iPhone that most users will gravitate towards. Our Editor-in-Chief, Chance, aptly described the iPhone 17 Pro as the “2021 MacBook Pro-ification” of the iPhone, highlighting the contrast between the bulked-up Pro and the streamlined Air.
In the early days of the iPhone, Apple offered only a single model, and if that approach were still in play, the iPhone Air would undoubtedly be the top choice. Thankfully, Apple provides a wide array of options, ensuring there’s an iPhone for everyone. Just as the MacBook Air became the preferred Mac over time, and the original iPad Air was a worthy successor to its predecessors, the iPhone Air is poised to become the new normal for smartphones. While it may have limitations now, with future iterations promising better battery life and enhanced camera features, the Air has the potential to truly soar.
