Insta360 has just unveiled its latest innovation, the X4 Air, a 360-degree action camera that serves as a lighter and more affordable alternative to the recently launched X5. Priced at just $399.99, the X4 Air retains impressive features, including 8K recording capabilities, while offering a more budget-friendly option than the X5, which retails for $549.99.
The X4 Air is now available worldwide through the Insta360 online store in two sleek color options: graphite black and arctic white. However, customers in the US and Canada will have to wait a little longer, as availability is still marked as “coming soon.”
While the X4 Air mirrors many of the recording capabilities found in its predecessor, the X4, there are some notable differences. It supports 360-degree 8K video recording at a maximum frame rate of 30fps. If users opt for 4K resolution, the frame rate increases to 50fps. In contrast, the X5 and X4 can capture 4K video at up to 100fps, making them better suited for capturing slow-motion clips. For those keen on high-speed recording, the X4 Air can achieve up to 120fps in single-lens mode at 1080p.
When it comes to still photography, the X4 Air maxes out at 29 megapixels, a step down from the 72MP capabilities of both the X5 and X4. Although this may seem like a drawback, the X4 Air is equipped with a pair of 1/1.8-inch sensors that are slightly larger than the sensors used in the older X4 model. This upgrade is expected to enhance the camera's ability to deliver “better detail and more vivid color straight out of the camera.” However, for low-light photography enthusiasts, the larger 1/1.28-inch sensors in the X5 might be worth considering.
One of the most appealing aspects of the new X4 Air is its compact size. Measuring just 113mm tall and weighing only 165 grams, it is approximately 10 millimeters shorter and 30 grams lighter than the X4 and X5 models. This reduced weight makes the X4 Air a convenient option for users who want to carry their camera throughout the day without the added bulk.
The X4 Air features a smaller 2,010mAh battery, which results in a battery life of up to 88 minutes when recording at 8K / 30fps. This performance falls between the X4 and X5, making it suitable for extended shooting sessions. Additionally, the X4 Air retains the removable lens guards introduced with the X4 and includes user-replaceable lenses that can be swapped out in seconds, a feature that was highly praised in the X5.
Durability is another strong suit of the X4 Air. It is waterproof to depths of up to 49 feet without the need for a dive housing, similar to the X5. This makes it an ideal companion for underwater adventures. Moreover, the X4 Air includes multiple hands-free recording options, such as gesture control, voice activation, and the innovative ability to twist a selfie stick to initiate recording.
The Insta360 X4 Air is a compelling option for action camera enthusiasts looking for a lightweight, high-quality device that balances performance and price. With its impressive 8K recording capabilities, user-friendly features, and compact design, the X4 Air is set to be a popular choice for capturing life's adventures.
