With the Google Pixel 10 now just over a month old, speculation regarding its successor, the Pixel 11, is starting to gain momentum. Recent reports suggest that the Tensor G6 chip designed for the Pixel 11 may feature a switch to a MediaTek modem, a significant change from the previous models. This follows an earlier report in late 2024 that indicated Google would utilize a MediaTek modem for the Pixel 10 series. However, those plans did not materialize, and the device continued to rely on Samsung’s Exynos 5400i modem.
According to a leak from Mystic Leaks, Google is currently engaged in “early internal testing” of the MediaTek M90 modem for the Pixel 11 and Tensor G6. Evidence of this testing has surfaced in the form of a command line screenshot displaying the baseband version as “a900a.” Notably, the bootloader for the upcoming device is reportedly named “spacecraft,” a departure from the Pixel 10’s “deepspace” designation. This information represents the extent of the latest leak regarding the Pixel 11.
The MediaTek M90 5G modem was unveiled at the MWC 2025 in February, boasting impressive specifications. It offers a peak downlink speed of 12Gbps, features dual 5G SIM dual-active support, and comes equipped with dual data capabilities. MediaTek emphasizes the incorporation of “AI models” that are designed to enhance both power efficiency and overall device performance. Furthermore, the modem includes support for satellite connectivity, which is essential for maintaining the flagship features of the Pixel series.
While the Exynos 5400(i) used in the Pixel 9 and Pixel 10 has effectively addressed the overheating issues that plagued earlier iterations, the MediaTek M90 promises an 18% reduction in average power consumption compared to its predecessors. This potential shift in modem technology would signify a continued move away from Samsung’s foundry for Google's devices.
In addition to the modem changes, there are renewed discussions about the Tensor G6. Reports indicate that the chip is codenamed “Malibu.” Leaked internal documents from Google’s “gChips” division, dated October 2024, provided insights into the current progress of both the Tensor G5 and G6, highlighting ongoing developments in Google's chip technology.
As the launch of the Google Pixel 11 approaches, more information is likely to emerge regarding its specifications and features, including the anticipated improvements brought by the Tensor G6 and the MediaTek M90 modem. Stay tuned for updates as we monitor the latest developments in this exciting new chapter for Google's smartphone lineup.
