After generating excitement last month, Google has officially unveiled the design of its native NotebookLM app for both Android and iPhone users. This innovative application enhances the way users interact with their notes and multimedia content, making it an exciting addition to Google’s suite of productivity tools.
The homepage of the NotebookLM mobile app features intuitive top tabs labeled Recent, Shared, Title, and Downloaded. These tabs provide users with easy access to their notebooks and various functionalities. Below these tabs, a list of your notebooks is displayed, with each card showcasing a prominent play button that launches the Audio Overview. This feature is particularly noteworthy as Google promotes its background playback and offline support, allowing users to listen to their notes anywhere, anytime.
The fullscreen audio player offers a visually engaging waveform, making the listening experience more enjoyable. Users can also join podcasts to ask questions and engage in follow-up discussions with AI hosts, enhancing interaction and learning.
At the bottom of the app, a wide "Create new" floating action button (FAB) allows users to easily initiate new notes. Similar to the web version, NotebookLM supports uploading various content types, including PDFs, websites, YouTube videos, and even pasting text directly into the app. Furthermore, NotebookLM will feature in the system share sheet, streamlining the process of adding sources directly from other applications.
When users open a notebook, they will notice a bottom bar layout that provides quick access to Sources, Chat, and Studio (tools). This layout closely resembles the current mobile website, ensuring a familiar and user-friendly experience. Notably, this native app experience is set to replace the PWA (Progressive Web App) for the majority of users, enhancing overall functionality.
In addition to the designs for Android and iPhone, Google has also shared a glimpse of the NotebookLM tablet interface. This optimized design promises a seamless experience across different devices. Officially, the NotebookLM app is expected to enter beta testing in the next few weeks, with the iOS App Store listing indicating a potential launch date of May 20, coinciding with the first day of I/O 2025.
